Budget, a facility study, and acquisition of land were all part of Wednesday’s Manhattan Ogden school board meeting. The meeting started off with a forum concerning the budget.  This was the public’s opportunity to come talk with the school board about their concerns as to where the budget money should go.  With an hour and a half set aside, there were no public comments.  Lew Faust, Director of Business Services, spent the time reviewing Budget 101 and a preliminary question and answer session with the board.  A budget work session is planned for next Wednesday, July 24. The loss of Angel Rodriguez has left K-State’s point guard situation for 2013-14 up in the air. Rodriguez transferred to Miami this offseason, and K-State’s returning experience at the position left with him. [mp3-jplayer] The most capable candidate to take over might be incoming Freshman Jevon Thomas, arguably K-State’s most heralded recruit of the 2013 class. As of right now Thomas wouldn’t be eligible until the end of the first semester at K-State next year. That would mean he couldn’t practice or play with the team until December 13th. K-State leads the way with five selections on the preseason all-Big 12 team picked by the league’s media.  The Wildcat trio of offensive lineman Cornelius Lucas, running back John Hubert, and safety Ty Zimmerman all make the team after being selected first all-Big 12 last season. K-State nabs both returner spots on the preseason all-Big 12 squad with Tyler Lockett on kickoffs and Tramaine Thompson on punts.  Lockett was also the preseason all-league kickoff returner in 2012. Wamego’s Boat Ramp is becoming an attraction. At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, City Manager Merl Page introduced Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Roger Wolf, who presented new signage to the new boat ramp. According to Wolf, the Wildlife and Parks Department wants to promote activities along the Kansas River after receiving national recognition last year as a National Water Trail. He said there are 19 access points along the River between Junction City and Kansas City, and wants to promote usage of the river. The City of Manhattan may enter into a development agreement with the McDonald’s on 3rd St. The project involves the construction of a new retail space near the intersection of 4th and Bluemont. The City would foot the bill for the estimated $200,000-$230,000 in infrastructure improvements, while McDonald’s would pay for the new building. McDonald’s will file a petition for a Transportation Development District that will include both the new and old retail space. A half-cent sales tax will be added in the district in order for the City to recoup its investment.
