Dakota Kaufman posted nine kills as the K-State volleyball team representing  Team USA at the World University Games put a scare into host and tournament favorite Russia, who prevailed though 25-16, 25-23, and 25-19.  Chelsea Keating added seven kills, while Kaitlynn Pelger had six.  Katie Brand, the Cats’ redshirt freshman setter, led the way with 19 digs, Keating had 15, Tristan McCarty came up with 12, and Pelger contributed 10. A 28-year-old Fort Riley soldier has been arrested on a charge of possession of child pornography . Junction City Police Lt. Jeff Childs tells KMAN Sean Vincent was taken into custody after a search warrant executed at his residence on Sandpiper Court resulted in evidence found, including child pornography on his computer. In addition, Childs says a small amount of marijuana was discovered so Vincent also faces drug-related charges. Vincent was arrested at about 10:45 Tuesday morning.

TOPEKA – Kansas Attorney General announced Thursday a record number of Kansans applied for permits to carry concealed handguns during the recently ended Fiscal Year 2013. Schmidt said his office received 25,340 applications for concealed carry permits between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013. This number was more than double the previous fiscal-year record of 12,408 permit applications in Fiscal Year 2012. Schmidt’s office administers the concealed carry licensing program. NEW YORK (AP) James Shields wiggled out of early trouble and got homerun help from Billy Butler and David Lough as the Kansas City Royals sent the New York Yankees to their third straight loss, 3-1 Tuesday night. Rodney McGruder and Jackie Carmichael each scored four points as the Miami Heat beat the Orlando Magic 94-80 in the NBA Summer League on Tuesday afternoon.
