TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Most committees of the Kansas Senate will have new leaders when conservative Republicans take control of the chamber in January. A GOP leadership committee on Tuesday appointed chairmen for the Senate’s 13 standing committees. Eleven will be new after conservatives ousted moderate Republican leaders in this year’s GOP primaries. All committees are chaired by Republicans, who outnumber Democrats in the chamber 32-8. The chairmen will assume their jobs when the 2013 session convenes in January. “Christmas has come early for the soldiers and their families at Fort Riley.” Those are the words of U-S Senator Jerry Moran of Manhattan, when commenting on word of a $35.2 million  grant toward a new middle school on post. Moran says this is money appropriated from Congress to help military installations with the greatest needs. Fort Riley was listed as seventh in having the most challenges in dealing with students in terms of facilities. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas schools will continue to decide individually whether to allow students to knock out a physical education requirement by participating in junior ROTC. On Tuesday, the Kansas Board of Education rejected a new rule that would have given students one PE credit for completing two years of junior ROTC. Kansas students are required to earn one physical education credit to graduate. Material provided to the board says 20 Kansas schools offer junior ROTC. More honors were bestowed on the Big 12 Champion Kansas State Wildcats today as six players made the Associated Press All-America team. Quarterback Collin Klein, a Heisman Trophy Finalist and Linebacker Arthur Brown were named to the Second Team, Safety Ty Zimmerman was named to the Third Team while Wide Receiver Tyler Lockett, Tight End Travis Tannahill and Cornerback Nigel Malone were chosen as Honorable Mentions. K-State Senior Guard Rodney McGruder has been named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week. McGruder had 15 points and 11 rebounds in K-State’s first road win of the season at George Washington on Saturday. It was a season high in rebounds and minutes played for McGruder who was playing in front of 60 plus friends and family in his hometown of Washington D.C. Multiple warrants lead to the arrest of a Manhattan area man. Riley County Police told reporters on Tuesday that Joshua William Dixon(23) of 3212 Cloud Circle was arrested late Monday morning on charges stemming from several warrants. Dixon had a warrant for failure to appear with an original charge of criminal use of a financial card for less than one thousand dollars, and a warrant for unlawful use of a cell phone. An Outdoor Wildlife Learning Site is slated for Wamego’s Middle School. At Monday’s Board of Education meeting, Middle School Teacher Shane Neel provided information and the layout of the proposed Outdoor Classroom or OWLS. According to the plan, the area west of the Middle School will be divided in plots for the study of various Ecological research programs, which will include water management, fire burn areas, and gardening.
