WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A class-action lawsuit by workers at a south-central Kansas slaughterhouse has been settled in mediation. No details of the settlement in the case against Creekstone Farms Premium Beef are included in a notice filed Thursday in court. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of an estimated 700 workers at the Arkansas City City packing plant over so-called “gang time” compensation. The practice pays employees only when product is moving, plus 10 minutes for putting on and removing protective gear. The workers also claimed the company wasn’t paying for all the time they worked. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A Wichita group opposed to adding fluoride to city water is challenging fluoride supporters to a televised debate ahead of a November vote. The Wichita Eagle reports the group Pure Water for Wichita issued the challenge to Wichitans for Healthy Teeth. The debate is proposed for Oct. 17, about three weeks before the election. Pure Water spokeswoman Ann Garvey says she’s hoping for an open and frank discussion about fluoride. A spokesman for Wichitans for Healthy Teeth said it had not yet received the challenge. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback has revised an executive order making it easier for drought-stricken livestock producers to get hay to their animals. Thursday’s order replaces one Brownback issued in late July waiving some rules for trucks on Kansas roads. The order suspends requirements for registration and fuel tax permits from the state Revenue Department. It also suspends several regulations of the Kansas Corporation Commission. Brownback says the goal is to make it easier to deliver hay to livestock in places where drought has damaged or destroyed pastures and silage crops. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Kansas judge has postponed a preliminary hearing for a man charged with intentionally using his vehicle to kill an 18-year-old Topeka woman. Online court records show Shawnee County District Judge Cheryl Rios Kingfisher plans to set a new hearing date for 21-year-old Dustin Leftwich on Sept. 6. Leftwich has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and murdering Brenna Morgart, whose body was found in a field near Topeka on May 25. In a crime of burglary and criminal damage to property, the suspect remains unknown. Eric Enderle, (28) of the 3300 block of Fairman Circle, reported having $2,000 worth of damage to his home. Enderle reported that the damage occurred sometime between Aug 20th at 5:30 pm and Aug 23rd at 4:30 pm. Among the items damaged included the carpet, sheet rock, an interior door, miscellaneous electronics and other items. —- A number of vehicles were reported to have been damaged within the past week. (AP)   Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby believes a multi-year television deal that could be worth as much as $2.6 billion could be finalized in a matter of weeks.  Bowlsby also said during a stop at Kansas on Wednesday that a TV deal for the Champions Bowl, a new postseason game between the Big 12 and SEC, will be announced soon, and that officials from both conferences are ready to review five bids to host the game.  The recently hired commissioner is touring member schools, hitting nine of 10 in the coming days. Some much needed rain in the area will have an effect on Friday night’s high school football scrimmages. The Manhattan High, Rock Creek, and Blue Valley football scrimmages has been cancelled for Friday evening.  The Rams will just have regular football practice on Friday.  Scrimmages at Wamego and Frankfort will be moved to the teams’ practice fields. Wamego has cancelled their fall sports recognition, and will now start their scrimmage at 6:30.  Frankfort will still have their scrimmage at 7:00pm on Friday. Riley County’s scrimmage will go on as scheduled at 7:00pm.
