KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Kansas is getting a $400,000 federal grant to improve its prescription drug monitoring program to combat what U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom calls the nation’s fastest-growing drug problem. Grissom announced the grant to the Kansas Board of Pharmacy on Tuesday. The board will use the money to strengthen the Kansas program and find new ways to share information between states. Kansas pharmacies report all controlled substances they dispense to the monitoring program. WASHINGTON (AP) A new report shows Kansas students performing about the same on the ACT college entrance exam this year as they did in 2011. Data released Wednesday for the class of 2012 show the state’s composite score was 21.9, compared to 22 the year before. The highest score possible is 36. Nationally, the average score was 21.1. The percentage of Kansas graduates earning scores indicating readiness for college was highest in English at 73 percent and lowest in science at 35 percent. Eighty-one percent of Kansas’ 2012 graduates took the exam, compared to 79 percent last year.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A retired air refueling plane that first flew during the Eisenhower administration is heading for permanent display at the Museum of the Kansas National Guard in Topeka. The KC-135 was added to the Air Force fleet in July 1958. It was used by the Air Force and then by the Kansas National Guard’s 190th Air Refueling Wing until 2007. The museum staff requested that the KC-135E Stratotanker be spared decommissioning at an Air Force depot in Arizona. Around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, Brian Kintzel Jr. (23) of Manhattan,was driving a blue 2005 Chevy Trail Blazer SUV traveling westbound on the 1800 block of Wildcat Creek Road.  Kintzel lost control and caused the vehicle to roll into the south ditch where it struck a fence and broke a gate. Timothy Wilson (20), of Fort Riley, was seated in the passenger seat during the accident. Wednesday morning, surrounded by a number of trees in the north greenhouse, a number of representatives from the Kansas Forest Service and the Kansas Pipeline Association were present for a celebration. Larry Biles, state forester, had met with the Kansas Pipeline Association a couple of months ago to present a need they had for a new greenhouse. Michael Potvin, president of the Kansas Pipeline Association, along with others from the association decided to make a contribution to the Kansas Forest Service and the Conservation Trees Program. More than 300 1st Infantry Division Soldiers assigned to the 1st Sustainment Brigade will soon join fellow “Big Red One” Soldiers in eastern Afghanistan. “Durable” leaders will case the brigade’s colors Monday during a ceremony on Cavalry Parade Field. The event is a symbolic last step in preparation for deployment. The Sustainment Brigade’s mission in Afghanistan is to provide U.S. and Joint Task Force Coalition Forces with support services including: transportation, supply, signal, and other operations. HOUSTON (AP)   The city of Houston has submitted a bid to host the new Big 12-Southeastern Conference bowl dubbed the “Champions Bowl” and join the rotation for semifinal games in college football’s upcoming playoff system.  Reliant Stadium has hosted a bowl game, currently the Meineke Car Care Bowl, since 2006.  The Champions Bowl and college football’s four-team playoff will begin in the 2014 season.  According to reports, other cities that plan to bid on the package are Arlington (Dallas Cowboys Stadium, Cotton Bowl), San Antonio (Alamodome, Alamo Bowl), New Orleans (Superdome, Sugar Bowl), and Atlanta (Georgia Dome, Chick-fil-a Bowl).
