WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Police are seeking a 19-year-old suspect in a double-homicide at a Dollar General store in Wichita. The Wichita Eagle reports that a warrant was filed Saturday charging the suspect with two counts of murder. Police Lt. Scott Heimerman says 22-year-old store employee Zachary Hunt and 79-year-old customer Henry Harvey were fatally wounded around 8 p.m. Friday. Customers who arrived soon afterward called 911. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Washburn University will be featured on the official Kansas ornament that will be part of the National Christmas Tree display in Washington. The Topeka university was founded in 1865, and the school is preparing for its 150th anniversary. The Washburn sesquicentennial committee designed the ornament. It bears Washburn’s 150th anniversary logo, which shows the school’s mascot, the Ichabod. The state seal is on the back of the ornament. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) An observatory at Washburn University is opening its doors to the public next week. Children and adults will get a chance to view the night sky from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Crane Observatory in Topeka. It features a Warner Swasey refracting telescope built in the late 1800s. The event is free but will be canceled if the weather isn’t conducive to viewing the sky. The observatory and planetarium is in Stoffer Science Hall.

From Monday to Wednesday, Barbara Zitwer will be in the Kansas City area to talk to broadcasters and sign copies of “Still Livin’: The True Story of How One Couple Defied All Odds and Found the Gift of Life.” She wrote it with her husband, Gil Alicea. Belcher reportedly killed his girlfriend, twenty-two year old Kasandra M. Perkins, before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and committing suicide. Tis the season, and the Mayor’s Spirit of the Holidays Parade showcased Manhattan’s spirit on Friday night. The downtown area was lit up in festive lights and a signs of the upcoming holiday seasons. The parade started at 6pm and threaded through the downtown area, and ended in a lighting ceremony in Triangle Park. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Sedgwick County officials say they will close a ranch for troubled boys if the state does not provide more financial help. County officials told south-central lawmakers on Thursday that the county can’t afford to keep the Judge James V. Riddel Boys Ranch at Lake Afton open past next year. The home offers rehabilitation programs for boys considered at high or moderate risk of reoffending. The Wichita Eagle reports the state pays $126 a day for each boy at the ranch.
