The idea of adding a fence around a portion of the Alvan D. Johnson Law Enforcement Center was proposed during a previous Riley County Commission meeting.  Many individuals going to and from work release have created an unwanted footpath through the grass outside the center.  This fence would block those individuals off so they stop cutting through that area. The  storm that came through the area Wednesday night has caused hazardous road conditions as well as power outages for many residents in the city of Manhattan and surrounding counties. Spokeswoman for Westar energy Erin Larow says the high winds have caused most of the outages, and are hampering crews as they try to get out and repair the damage. Larow also cites hazardous road conditions as a major problem as crews from surrounding counties mobilize and try to get the the areas that are most effected. A gaping hole was left in K-State’s secondary when junior safety Ty Zimmerman went down in the fourth quarter of the Cats’ win at TCU.  Even though Dante Barnett and Thomas Ferguson filled in admirably, the impact was great as Baylor piled up 342 rushing yards in a 52-24 romp over K-State.  Whether Zimmerman plays in the Fiesta Bowl against Oregon on January 3rd seven weeks after his injury remains to been.  However, Coach Bill Snyder says his third team all-American has been a participant in some aspects of practice this month, and “would like to think that he’ll be…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   Romeo Crennel isn’t worrying about his future with the Kansas City Chiefs. The veteran coach says he’s focused solely on trying to pluck off a win or two down the stretch in what has turned out to be a season of misery for the Chiefs. Sports reported during the Longhorns’ 85-67 victory over No. 23 North Carolina that Kabongo will be dealt a season-long ban following an investigation into the sophomore’s relationship with Rich Paul, the agent of LeBron James of the Miami Heat. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) A Lawrence obesity specialist who co-authored the “Atkins Diabetes Revolution” with the late weight loss expert and others has been indicted on tax evasion charges. The U.S. attorney’s office said Wednesday that Dr. Mary Vernon is charged with five counts of tax evasion and one count of making a false statement to a bank to obtain a loan. The “Atkins Diabetes Revolution” was published in 2004, a year after the death of Dr. Robert Atkins. The 60-year-old Vernon earned almost $800,000 by working for Atkins’ companies from 2003 to 2008. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Topeka attorney who stole more than $460,000 from several clients’ trust funds and another accused of inadequately representing clients will no longer be able to practice law. Dockets provided by the Kansas Supreme Court on Wednesday show that Robert Telthorst and Steven Rosel have been disbarred. The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that the men voluntarily surrendering their law licenses previously. Telthorst pleaded guilty last month to wire fraud and money laundering. He admitted to taking clients’ money for his personal use. Meanwhile, three professional conduct complaints had been filed against Rosel. He’s accused of making inappropriate advances…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A national survey ranks Kansas at the bottom among states in being prepared for public health emergencies, terrorism incidents and natural disasters. But state officials took issue Wednesday with the latest, annual “Ready or Not?” report from the nonpartisan Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback is urging Kansans to observe a moment of silence Friday for the victims of the school massacre in Newtown, Conn. Brownback and governors across the country are calling for people to pause and reflect at 9:30 a.m. in local time zones. That’s the hour of the shooting last Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
