TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Governor Sam Brownback has asked the Kansas higher education system deserves to avoid cuts in state funding. Brownback has used a statewide tour to highlight the importance of higher education. He also campaigned for his proposal to keep funding for the schools at current levels in the budget year that starts July 1. In other news, Governor Sam Brownback says Kansas legislators need to approve $202 million in new bonds for a national biosecurity lab. Freshman right hander Levi Mavorhis pitched five and a third scoreless innings in his first career start and K-State claimed a 6-1 victory over TCU on Friday night at Tointon Family Stadium.  MaVorhis (4-0) did give up eight hits, but worked his way out of trouble throughout the ballgame.  Gerardo Esquivel needed just four pitches to finish the sixth inning, Jake Matthys gave up a run in two innings, and Tanner Witt shut it down in the ninth. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the theft of a black 2013 Hyundai Accent.  The four door vehicle was believed to have been stolen sometime between late January 2013 and March 24, 2013. The vehicle was reported missing from Dick Edwards Hyundai at 130 East Poyntz in Manhattan.  The loss of the vehicle is reported to be 18,000 dollars. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita police are investigating a woman’s allegation that she was sexually assaulted by a member of this year’s Wichita State men’s basketball team. Police Lt. Doug Nolte said Thursday the player has not been arrested or charged. Nolte did not name the player but said he has no eligibility remaining, meaning he’s technically a former player. The incident allegedly occurred over the weekend at the home of another Shocker basketball player. Police said the 20-year-old woman who is not a Wichita State student called 911 to report she woke up Sunday morning while the suspect was raping…

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) An emergency homeless shelter will open in Hutchinson Monday, thanks to a lot of help from volunteers and donors. New Beginnings says it will open the NOEL Lodge on Monday afternoon. It will have 25 beds, with men’s and women’s dormitories and three family rooms. An open house for the public will be held Saturday. The Hutchinson News reports the shelter was to open in February but was delayed after inspectors found problems with a firewall, requiring New Beginnings to raise another $25,000.
