Fort Riley authorities announced Monday the deaths of two 1st Infantry Division Soldiers this past Friday in Pakktika Province in Afghanistan. Sgt. Channing Hicks, 24,  and Specialist Joseph Richardson, 23, were killed when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. Both Soldiers were infantrymen assigned to 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley. Hicks was originally from Greer, South Carolina and joined the Army in June 2006. He previously served two deployments to Iraq with the 1st Infantry Division. Earning their first win over a ranked team since 2004, Texas Tech knocked off #20 K-State on Saturday night in Lubbock.  The Lady Raiders claimed the match in four sets, 25-20, 15-25, 25-22, 25-23.  The Cats nearly forced a fifth set as they rallied from a 20-15 deficit to lead 22-21 in the fourth.  But, Tech scored four of the final five points, and the game-winner came on a K-State block that bounced off the knee of Lady Raider libero Rachel Brummitt and behind the Cats into the opposite corner for a point. On Sunday evening Riley County Police say they are looking for a white Mazda with front end damage in relation to a child abduction.  RCPD Sergeant Daryl Ascher confirmed the following details. The Mazda is being driven by a female in her late twenties.  The vehicle is also said to have a Briggs auto vanity plate with grill and bumper damage.  Police say the car might be located in the Topeka area. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A 30-year-old woman is accused of repeatedly crashing into patrol cars while fleeing from Wichita police. The Wichita Eagle reports that the chase started Saturday morning after police received a disturbance call. Sgt. Jeff Davis says the responding officers parked at both ends of the woman’s stopped vehicle. The woman allegedly slammed into both patrol cars and fled, causing one of the officers to jump out of the way. Police say the chase lasted for about 25 minutes and reached speeds of about 70 mp. ST. JOHN, Kan. (AP) A mountain lion sighting has been confirmed near the central Kansas town of St. John. The Hutchinson News reports that a motion-activated trail camera captured an image of the animal Oct. 31. Kurt Keesling discovered the picture when he checked his camera Wednesday. On Friday, a Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism wildlife biologist visited the site and confirmed the photo’s validity. It’s the first documented report of a mountain lion in the state since last January, when tracks were found in Washington County. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A language arts teacher at Andover Middle School has been named the 2013 Kansas Teacher of the Year. Dyane Smokorowski won the honor during ceremonies Saturday night in Wichita. As Teacher of the Year, she receives a $4,000 cash award and an educational technology package worth about $11,000. In addition to teaching eighth-graders, Smokorowski works with other teachers across Kansas and the nation to better use technology in their classrooms. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The stories of Kansans are told in the new Ken Burns documentary “The Dust Bowl.” The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that tears well up in the eyes of Dale and Floyd Coen as they recall their 2.5-year-old sister Rena Marie. She died in 1935 of dust pneumonia. The Coens are two of seven brothers who grew up and still reside in Morton County. HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) After obtaining one conviction in the mistaken-identification killing of a Hutchinson mother, authorities have shifted their focus to a second suspect. The Hutchinson News reports that Billy Joe Craig is set to stand trial Jan. 28 in the 2011 shooting death of Jennifer Heckel. Another man, Charles Christopher Logsdon, was convicted earlier this month of charges that include first-degree murder. Investigators have said they believe Craig and Logsdon planned to rob someone else. Instead, they are accused of going to the wrong house and killing Heckel.
