TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas Senate has given final approval to a $14 billion budget for the next fiscal year that starts July 1. Thursday’s 24-16 vote sends the measure to the House, which approved its own budget bill Wednesday. Negotiators from the two chambers are expected to begin meeting next week to work out a final version. Both bills generally follow spending recommendations laid out by Republican Gov. Sam Brownback. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas lawmakers have dropped their pursuit of a proposal to narrow the topics permitted in contract negotiations between teachers and school districts. House Commerce Committee Chairman Marvin Kleeb confirmed Thursday his committee won’t vote this year on a bill on teacher bargaining rights. The measure would reduce the issues that teachers’ groups could negotiate with local school boards. Teachers could still bargain on matters like pay and sick leave, but no longer on how they are evaluated. Update: The Manhattan Fire Department has released more information regarding a structure fire on Anderson Avenue KMAN first told you about Friday morning. When fire crews arrived at the scene, they found a heavily involved one-story residential structure. The fire reached a second alarm before it was contained within approximately 45 minutes. Six fire apparatus and 21 firefighters responded with the last units clearing at around 11:00 p.m. Traffic on Anderson Avenue had to be closed for approximately four hours. The house was being remodeled and was vacant at the time of the fire. Loss is estimated at $10,000 to…

A request to a hire a part-time person was granted, while some other positions are up for review. In November of last year, positions were approved for the Riley County public works department and the planning and development department.  Public works received two positions to fill the gap of Assistant Public Works/Parks Director, Rod Meredith’s retirement.  Planning and development gained one position as well around that time.  Human Resource Manager, Cindy Volanti told the county commission, during their Thursday meeting it’s time to review these positions. DAYTON, Ohio (AP)   Tyrone Garland led La Salle’s guard-driven offense with 22 points, and the Explorers wrapped up the NCAA tournament’s First Four by getting the better of an old-fashioned shootout, beating Boise State 80-71 on Wednesday night. The family of a six-month-old child who died earlier this week in what has become a reported murder case is asking for financial assistance for a memorial fund. The grandmother of Dominic James Lubrano, Gina Brisby, notified KMAN Wednesday that a fund has been established at Kansas State Bank at 1010 Westloop for Lubrano. Michael DeChant, 19, was arrested in connection with the case and is charged with first degree murder. His bond has been set at one million dollars.
