LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) The U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth is on lockdown after two separate fights broke out. Penitentiary officials say in a news release the lockdown was declared Sunday evening after a fight in one of the housing units. Another fight occurred earlier in the day in the recreation yard. Both fights were quickly contained and involved only a few inmates. Officials say security was never breached during the fights. No staff members were injured and two inmates suffered only minor injuries. No programs will be held and no visiting will be allowed until the lockdown ends.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Police say a 19-year-old man is jailed as a suspect in the fatal shooting of two people at a Wichita discount store. The suspect was arrested Sunday afternoon. He had been sought since the shooting Friday at a Dollar General store. The victims of the shooting were 79-year-old Henry Harvey, a customer at the store, and 22-year-old Zachary Hunt, a store employee. The suspect is being held in the Sedgwick County Jail facing two charges of first-degree murder. Bond has not yet been set.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A Jamaican woman faces sentencing for entering into a sham marriage with a Fort Riley soldier to get legal immigration status. Shannakay Hunter now lives in New York City. U.S. District Judge Monti Belot gave her permission to participate by phone in her sentencing Monday, rather than traveling to Wichita for the proceeding. Hunter was convicted in August of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud, marriage fraud and lying to the government. She faces up to five years on each count but is likely to get far less prison time if any under federal guidelines. The man she…

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Republican legislators are meeting in the Statehouse to choose the next Senate president and speaker of the House. Monday’s elections will be held by returning incumbents and those taking office for the first time in January. Republicans will outnumber Democrats during the upcoming session 32-8 in the Senate and 92-33 in the House. Party primaries in August saw the conservative wing of the Republican Party oust several moderates, including Senate President Steve Morris. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) An agency that provides legal assistance to low-income Kansans is closing its branch office in Lawrence. Kansas Legal Service says it plans to shut the Lawrence office at the end of the year because of funding cuts. KLS managing attorney Bethany Roberts told The Lawrence Journal-World the agency’s Topeka office will provide services to clients in Douglas and Jefferson counties. Roberts says Kansas Legal Services lost contracts with the state to help move people from state assistance to federal assistance. Two of those contracts were worth a total of nearly $1 million. Monday saw another regular business meeting for the Pottawatomie County Commission and with November closing out last week they were looking at another round of monthly updates from their departments. Scott Schwinn, county transfer station landfill supervisor and county sanitarian, Leslie Campbell, Pottawatomie County Heath Director, and Gregg Webster, zoning administrator, all gave their reports for the month of November. Three bids were submitted for the Noxious Weed Department tractor/roadside mower, and the bids were reviewed at Monday’s Riley County Commission meeting. The first bid came from KanEquip Incorporated in Wamego.  Option number one was for a tractor with a mounted rotary side mower, for $83,697.  Option number two involved a rear mower, for $23,250.  The corporation also submitted an alternate bid of $96,024. Concordia Tractor, out of Abilene, submitted an option of $93,989.85 for the tractor with a mounted rotary side mower.  They also provided an option of a side mower and a rear mower combined, at $106,316.85. A couple of Kansas inmates with local convictions are up for possible parole the next few months.Danny Lee Sprecker, 63, and  Roderick Fields, 53,  face several public comment sessions next month.Sprecker was convicted of second degree murder and rape in Riley county, with the murder case occurring in 1973 and rape case occurring in late 1968, with sentencing in 1969. Fields was convicted and has been serving time on a 1984 rape case in Riley county, as well as a 1993 aggravated robbery case in Sedgwick county. Multiple warrants lead the the arrest of a local man. Riley County police told reporters on Monday that Nicholas Michael Howe (22) was taken into custody early Sunday morning due to a large variety of warrants that had been issued to him. Howe had a $2,000 warrant from the Riley County court charging him with probation violation with an original charge of driving on a revoked license and being a habitual offender. There was also a warrant worth $2,500 issued from the city of Wamego for driving while suspended, leaving the scene of an accident, and having the wrong tag on…
