TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Authorities have arrested a 30-year-old man accused of breaking into the Statehouse office of Republican Rep. Tom Sloan of Lawrence The Lawrence Journal World reports that Sloan joked before the full House Friday morning that “none of my state secrets were stolen.” He quipped that the suspect probably thought he was breaking into the office of a more influential legislator. On Sunday at approximately 4:10 AM, Riley County Police responded to a complaint of multiple shots fired at 900 Garden Way in Manhattan Shortly after arriving on scene police found several victims of gunshot wounds as well as a single subject who was taken into custody. This individual’s name is also being withheld at this time, awaiting further investigation. Riley County Police Spokesman officer Mathew Droge says no further suspects are being sought at this time. SALINA, Kan. (AP) A Saline County judge has dropped several charges filed against a former cadet leader accused of sexually assaulting a younger cadet at an embattled Kansas military school. Judge Patrick Thompson made the decision Friday after a preliminary hearing for 18-year-old David James Burke, of McLean, Va. Burke had been charged with seven counts of aggravated sexual battery and one count of attempted aggravated criminal sodomy. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A sweeping anti-abortion bill is headed to Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback. The House gave final approval Friday to the measure, which blocks tax breaks for abortion providers and outlaws abortions performed solely because of the baby’s sex. The measure also declares that life begins “at fertilization,” language that abortion opponents call a statement of principle and not an outright ban on abortion, though the bill’s opponents are skeptical. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas House has rejected a compromise bill on liquor laws over objections that some of the language had never passed either legislative body this session. Senators had approved the bill earlier Friday. It includes rules and regulations for wine tastings and provisions for alcohol to be served at the Statehouse with approval from legislative leaders. But a section on contests for homebrews prompted House objections, since the text had never been approved by the House or Senate in its original form. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Investigators are checking whether a classic car had mechanical problems before it slammed into a northwest Wichita house, killing the driver. KAKE-TV reports police on Friday identified the driver as Murvall “Gene” Dick, 84. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash Thursday afternoon. Dick was at the wheel of a 1941 Packard convertible when it veered off a residential street and crashed into a home. A friend who was following in another classic car told police he saw the Packard accelerate suddenly before it went out of control. No one else was injured.
