A string of daytime burglaries have hit Pottawatomie County over the past month with the most recent happening on Thursday. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s office has reported that the incident occurred on Moody Road. Detective Gerald Schmidt, with the sheriff’s office, said that a report earlier in the day, however, has brought interest to a vehicle when a woman told detectives that a man in his mid 20s stopped by asking if a person lived there and then said he had the wrong address. A Manhattan man was taken into custody late Wednesday on a failure to appear charge. Tony Kolterman was originally charged with criminal deprivation of property. LaVeta Miller was arrested Thursday on a warrant charging her with theft by deception. A Barton County records clerk says Miller is jailed on $20,000 bond. The clerk didn’t know if Miller had an attorney. The Wichita Eagle reports that Miller worked as program director for Central Prairie Honor Flight until she was fired in July. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Trial dates have been set for the parents of two children found bound and blindfolded in a Walmart parking lot in eastern Kansas. The Douglas County district attorney’s office says Adolfo Gomez, 52, will stand trial on Jan. 7. His wife, Deborah Gomez, 44, is set for trial Feb. 4. The Gomezes, of Northlake, Ill., have pleaded not guilty to charges of child abuse and child endangerment. They were arrested June 13 after Lawrence police found two children, ages 5 and 7, tied up outside the family’s vehicle. Three other older children were inside the SUV unrestrained.…
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) The Justice Department’s watchdog agency is objecting to more than $12 million in fees racked up during the first three months of Hawker Beechcraft’s bankruptcy proceedings. In a filing Thursday, U.S. Trustee Tracy Hope Davis particularly chided the company for fees lawyers billed for the company’s failed attempt to pay its eight senior executives millions in bonuses. The government called the fees excessive and unreasonable. And the trustee noted the lawyers spent more time working on the bonus plan than other projects. HILL CITY, Kan. (AP) A northwest Kansas woman who won her battle to get Kansas to pay for an out-of-state transplant has lost her fight against liver disease. The Kansas City Star reports Mary Stinemetz, 66, of Hill City died Sunday at a Colorado hospital located near her daughter, three years after she learned she needed a new liver. The Jehovah’s Witness refused to undergo a transplant at the University of Kansas Hospital because she would need a blood transfusion, which went against her religion. The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced that as of Thursday, Oct 25th the I-70 eastbound and westbound rest areas between mile markers 292 and 294 are temporarily closed due to a water leak. The rest areas are located just west of Junction City. It is anticipated that repairs will be made and the rest area reopened by Wednesday, Oct 31st.

Now that the health department has officially changed over from being funded by the city, to being funded by the county, departments are experiencing strains in their own budgets. Information Technology/GIS Director, Robert Nall came before Riley County Commissioners during their Thursday meeting, to express concern regarding staff funding. Nall said if he continues moving forward with everything that had previously been figured in his budget, he will be $40,000 over budget due to the health department changes.
