As part of the old business section of the USD 383 school board agenda, a request was made for the board to rescind a motion they made at their March 27th meeting concerning the turf project at Bishop Stadium. Lew Faust, Director of Business Services, made the request to null the contract with Double E Construction, out of Gas, Kansas for the site work at Bishop Stadium.  The board approved that motion and also went on to approve unanimously to give the contract to Bayer Construction, of Manhattan, for the site work on in the amount of $388,259. While Manhattan was in a flash flood warning Wednesday evening, the Kansas City district of the Army Corps of Engineers held an Open House at the Manhattan Fire Station to discuss possible changes to the city’s levee system. With the choice of several options, they have decided the best plan for Manhattan would be for a 300 year flood plan, which costs almost 18 million dollars. The Federal Government will be funding 65 percent of the money for the project while the remaining 35 percent will come from local sources. The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Southern Riley, Pottawatomie, Northwestern Wabaunsee, and Western Jackson Counties until 9:45 P.M. Impacted areas may include Manhattan, Bellvue, Blaine, Circleville, Keats, Louisville, Ogden, Onaga, Soldier, St. George, Wamego, Westmoreland, Wheaton. Two K-State students have pleaded guilty to the charge of Arson resulting in Death in connection with an apartment fire that claimed the life of a K-State postdoctoral researcher. 20-year-old Patrick Scahill and 19-year-old Virginia Griese entered their pleas Wednesday afternoon in Federal District Court in Topeka before Judge Pamela Robinson. The two defendants were arrested following a fire that killed 34-year old Vasanta Pallem at her residence at 820 Sunset Avenue on the night of February 6. Jared King blasted a three-run homer in the first inning, his fifth of the season, and K-State swept the season series from rival Wichita State with a 4-1 victory on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium in the Air Capital.  Shane Conlon would add an RBI single in the fourth, and that was enough offense for the Cats. Oklahoma State national freshman of the year Marcus Smart is projected to be a top five pick in this year’s NBA Draft, but according to a report by Yahoo! Sports, Smart will announce today that he’s staying in school.  Smart, a second team all-American, transformed the Cowboys from a middle of the pack team in the Big 12 to a #5 seed in the NCAA Tournament.  He averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game this past season as Oklahoma State went 24-9.

ATLANTA (AP)   Jason Heyward, Justin Upton and Dan Uggla homered in the eighth inning, and Juan Francisco hit a pair of solo shots earlier in the game to help the Atlanta Braves win their 10th straight with a 6-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night. Wamego City Commissioners approved two ordinances that will impact utility rates. At Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, City Manager Merl Page reminded Commissioners of their approval to evaluate the City’s electric rates at the October 2012 meeting, because of a projected seven to eight percent revenue shortfall . Together with Energy Management Groups Greg Wright, an ordinance was developed establishing new rates for electricity supplied to the City of Wamego and Kansas Electric Utility customers, which will supersede the existing ordinance. Wright said the new rates reflect a 5.9 percent increase, and will recoup $384,000 per year to cover projected expenses…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Chiefs began a three-day, voluntary minicamp without franchise left tackle Branden Albert, who has not been a part of the team’s offseason program. The Chiefs are allowed the additional minicamp under terms of the collective bargaining agreement that grant extra workouts to teams that experienced a coaching change. Everybody on the roster was present for the session at the Chiefs’ practice facility except for Albert, who has signed his franchise tag.
