OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) One man has drowned and a 6-year-old boy nearly drowned in separate swimming pools in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park. The city’s fire department said the man died Friday night in a pool at an Econolodge. Later in the evening, the boy was found at the bottom of an apartment pool and rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The fire department used the twin accidents to remind people to be extra cautious during the summer swimming season. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Hawker Beechcraft has announced another round of layoffs, this one affecting about 125 workers. The Wichita Eagle reported that a letter to staff Friday said the layoffs come amid a “challenging and rapidly changing environment.” Company officials wrote that they’ll continue to evaluate the company’s operations and “initiate reductions in force and implement furloughs” when deemed appropriate. The Wichita-based aircraft manufacturer filed for bankruptcy protection in May. An Amber Alert issued for a three-year old Arkansas City boy was cancelled Sunday when he was found safe and the man who allegedly took him is in custody. Authorities issued the alert on Saturday evening after Anthony Hernandez was reported missing from his Arkansas City neighborhood. Although no details have been released the toddler was found safe on Sunday evening and the man he was with 33-year old Francisco Lopez is in custody though it’s not clear if he has actually been arrested or if any charges have been filed against him.

On Sunday, July 1 at about 11:55 am, Nicolas Dyer, a 17 year old Manhattan resident, was traveling northbound on Tri County Road when for some unknown reason, the vehicle went off the roadway and rolled, landing on it’s wheels. Dyer was taken to Mercy Regional Health Center for possible injuries and released. The Kansas Highway Patrol worked the accident.
On Sunday July 1, 2012 at approximately 2:39 am, a Deputy with the Geary County Sheriff’s Department attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a suspected intoxicated driver. The driver, later identified as Richard Sandoval, 21, of California, attempted to flee and elude the deputy. At about 2:40 am, the vehicle struck a tree and caught fire in the 500 block of West 8th Street, in Junction City. The deputy and an officer with the Junction City Police Department attempted to remove Sandoval from the vehicle but were unsuccessful.
