Though the Pottawatomie County Commissioners spent Monday doing the regular business items that make up their agenda, their audience was a little different. As part of a government lesson, 3rd and 4th graders were present to witness firsthand the workings of a government body. Cutbacks are a necessity with the current state of the economy, and Riley County Commissioners are feeling the crunch. The Assistant Public Works/Parks Director position has been a discussion topic on the past few commissioner agendas.  Public Works Director/County Engineer, Leon Hobson, came before commissioners on Monday to re-discuss the position and possible ways to move forward.  Hobson teamed up with Human Resource Manager/Deputy Clerk, Cindy Volanti, to research how other counties handle their public works and parks departments.  Hobson and Volanti said they were surprised to find that most counties do not have a specified parks department. Kansas State University has welcomed a variety of prestigious speakers to the Afred M. Landon Lecture Series on Public Issues for over 40 years.  The 161st Landon Lecture featuring 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin Dempsey, was held Monday in McCain Auditiorium on the K-State campus. Details were provided Monday regarding a Friday night accident on highway 24 at Hoffman Lane. Burton Lovgren of rural Manhattan was life flighted to Via Christi St. Francis in Topeka, after the motorcycle he was driving was involved in an accident with a pickup. Pottawatomie County Sheriff Greg Riat indicates Lovgren was eastbound on his motorcycle on highway 24 when a pickup driven by Gary Edwards of Manhattan pulled off of Hoffman Lane onto highway 24. Edwards apparently failed to yield. He was not injured. A condition report on Lovgren was not yet available.

A Topeka man was injured in an early morning accident that caused a traffic tie-up on I-70 in Geary county early Monday morning. Jeremy Mulham was taken to Geary Community Hospital by ambulance following the accident, reported shortly before seven a.m. The Geary county sheriff’s department reports Mulham was westbound at mile marker 305 when his ehicle struck the rear of another vehicle, Mulham lost control, and rolled his vehicle several times. Junction City Fire and EMS crews extricated him from his vehicle. Lifestar was present but was not needed for transport. Two other vehicles were damaged due to debris but…

The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Department reports several recent drug search warrants and arrests, with the latest this past Friday. Three individuals were taken into custody following execution of a search warrant in St. Mary’s, including Lacey Peters, 26  and  Kevin Gordon, 35, both of St. Mary’s, andStuart Ostrom 24,  whose address is unknown. While charges against the three vary a bit, all involve the alleged distribution of methamphetamine within one-thousand feet of a school. A Manhattan woman has been reported missing while traveling. Sixty three year old Benita Richards, who resides on the 1400 block of Beechwood Circle has been reported missing by her daughter. Allison Wisdom says that she last saw her mother when she dropped her off at the Kansas City International Airport. Richards was traveling to Honolulu, Hawaii in order to search for jobs. Wisdom reports that she had contact with her mother off and on until September 19th, but contact stopped at that time. She contacted Honolulu police, who advised her to contact her local police to file an initial report, and Riley…

Kansas State University is in mourning as it copes with the death of one of it’s own. Kansas State officials have announced 40 year old Roy Barnett died last Friday..  Barnett attended the University of Oklahoma, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1994, a master’s degree in 1997 and a doctorate in 2001 in sociology with a specialty in criminology. His mother and three siblings live in Oklahoma. Barnett joined the Kansas State University department of sociology, anthropology and social work in 2001 as a temporary instructor. He taught sociology and criminology courses and was the faculty adviser for the Criminology Club.…

A local man was taken into custody Saturday on two failure to appear charges. Thirty one year old Keith Singson of Ogden was charged with two counts of failure to appear, with the original charges being  two counts of possession with intent to distribute Meth amphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, burglary, and misdemeanor theft. Bond was set at $30,000. __________________________________________________________________ Two local men have reported that they were the victim of an assault. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office is asking for assistance in locating an individual in connection with a recent burglary. Mark Lawrence,  32, described as 5’11, 165 pounds, blue eyes and red hair. His address is unknown. Lawrence has been driving a white ’96 Chevy Blazer 2 door with temp Kansas tag. Lawrence is wanted in connection with a burglary in Pottawatomie County. A warrant has been issued for Lawrence by the District Court of Pottawatomie County for Burglary, a level 7 person felony, and Theft. a class A nonperson misdemeanor.
