During Thursday’s Riley County Commissioner meeting, Riley County Planning and Development Director, Monty Wedel, expressed concern regarding the new MPO map.  The map includes Fort Riley, and although this will help in terms of coordination, this does not help the budget.   By adding Fort Riley’s population in to Riley County, this in turn makes the budget increase as well.  When looking at MPO map number two, Riley County would be paying $19,775 over the five year period.  But the addition of Fort Riley would result in Riley County paying $53,000 over the five year period. When K-State matches up with Missouri State this Saturday night in the Little Apple, the coaching matchup will not be an unfamiliar one.  The Wildcats’ Bill Snyder and the Bears’ Terry Allen were both assistants in the state of Iowa in the 1980’s, matched up for five years when Allen was at Kansas, and they last met when Allen was with the Bears in 2010.  Snyder has won all six meetings, outscoring Allen 292-74.  The closest matchup was when K-State beat Missouri State 48-24 in 2010. (AP) Bruce Chen allowed four hits over a season-high eight innings, and Eric Hosmer’s infield single in the fourth drove in the only run in the Kansas City Royals’ 1-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.  The last time Chen (10-10) lasted eight innings was last September, in his final two starts of the year. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) A Kansas company will pay $5,000 in fines for not properly maintaining an apartment swimming pool where a 6-year-old boy drowned. Noah Davis drowned June 29 in a pool at Four Winds apartments in Overland Park. Police say his family could not see him at the bottom of the pool because the water was too murky. On Tuesday, the management company that operates the pool pleaded guilty to 10 violations, including failure to maintain the water clarity. PASSCO Four Winds was fined a total of $5,000. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Two candidates in a Republican primary for a Kansas House seat from Topeka say they won’t pursue any court challenges now that an unusual special election has settled the contest. Shawnee County officials on Wednesday certified the results from Tuesday’s special election, which was limited to a single Topeka polling place where some voters got the wrong ballots in the Aug. 7 primary. The only race still in doubt from the mix-up was for the Republican nomination in the 52nd House District. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) Investigators are trying to determine what caused a two-alarm fire at a recycling plant in Kansas City, Kan. The fire early Wednesday at the Deffenbaugh Recycling Co. plant did an estimated $1.5 million in damage. Fire department spokesman Craig Duke says the fire occurred in a steel building that was a sorting and processing center at the plant. Crews had to use heavy equipment to cut a path through the material so firefighters could get to fire. No injuries were reported.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback’s administration will sponsor meetings in 12 cities next month on its plans to overhaul the state’s Medicaid program. Administration officials say the meetings are designed to educate Medicaid participants and health care providers about the coming changes. The $2.9 billion-a-year program covers medical services for the poor, disabled and elderly. Brownback plans to turn management of the entire Medicaid program over to three private insurance companies beginning in January. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A Washington woman who is serving a 26-year sentence for hitting and killing two highway workers in Kansas says she did not receive a fair trial. An attorney representing 53-year-old Ramona I. Morgan of Chewelah, Wash., argued Wednesday that jury instructions and other factors in Morgan’s 2008 trial in Douglas County created a prejudice against her. She is suing the state of Kansas, alleging she is wrongfully imprisoned. Morgan was convicted of two counts of reckless second-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. SALINA, Kan. (AP) A Salina company says it will lay off 22 employees because of a drop in demand for fluorescent lamps. Philips Lighting announced Wednesday that the employees who will lose their jobs in November help make fluorescent lamps. Philips Lighting spokesman Silvie Casanova says Philips will employ just under 400 people in Salina after the layoffs. She says the plant also is not filling open positions. While a preliminary hearing had been scheduled Wednesday morning in a first degree murder case in Riley County District Court, only a brief hearing was held. The hearing dealt with the attorney who will be representing Daniel Parker, who is charged with the first degree murder of  Fredrick Beverly, 21.  The incident occured on New Year’s Day and Riley County Police refer to it as a “drive by” style shooting. In a previous hearing, the first degree felony of murder charge was expanded.  The allegation that it could have been first degree premeditated murder was also filed, meaning the level of murder…
