K-State is projected to finish 6th in the Big 12 by the media, and appropriately the Cats are the 6th of 6 Big 12 team to come in the USA Today coaches poll released today. Overall K-State is ranked 21st after a 10-3 season in 2011.  Elsewhere in the Big 12, Oklahoma ranks 4th, West Virginia is #11, Texas #15, TCU #17, and Oklahoma State is #19. Defending national champion North Dakota State is the preseason pick to win the Missouri Valley Football Conference title this season, with Northern Iowa tabbed second. Former K-State offensive lineman Eric Wolford is in his third year as head coach at Youngstown State, and his Penguins are picked third in the Valley.  Youngstown State has gone from three wins in 2010 to six wins a year ago, including a victory at North Dakota State.

A recent ad paid for by a Political Action Committee has prompted an apology from the candidate who was supposed to benefit from the ad. Kansas Senator Roger Reitz has apologized for an ad from the Kansas Jobs PAC which attacked fellow 22nd district candidate Bob Reader’s choice to home school his children amongst other items. Senator Reitz said quote ” Politics have become too mean and too personal, and that ad crossed the line.” Candidate Bob Reader accepted the apology and thanked Senator Reitz for releasing it.  Reader explains the campaigns can’t control what the PACs issue saying ” We have both been blamed…

Riley County standout and K-State freshman-to-be Kelly Thomson scored 16 points in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association all-star game on Thursday night in Topeka.  Thomson proved she’s one of the best shooters in the state by draining four three pointers, and tying the game-high in points with Highland Park post Shanise Brooks.  Their Blue team though lost to the White, 79-69 at Washburn University in Topeka. The Manhattan Manko Senior 17’ers will now have to battle thru the losers bracket at the “AAA” American Legion State Tournament, after a 15-7 loss to Pittsburg on Thursday night in the winners bracket semis.  The Manko Senior 17’ers will match up with Salina at 1:00pm on Friday afternoon at Tointon Family Stadium.  The morning game is Leavenworth against Newton, who fell to Hays 8-1 on Thursday night.  Hays will play Pittsburg at 5:00 in the winners’ bracket finals.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   Alcides Escobar’s RBI single with two outs in the 11th inning gave the Kansas City Royals a 7-6 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night.  Escobar’s two-strike hit scored Eric Hosmer, who led off the inning with a single.  The Indians rallied from a six-run first-inning deficit, but lost their sixth straight, their longest losing streak since dropping seven in a row from June 19-26, 2010.  Aaron Crow (2-1), the sixth Royals pitcher, worked a spotless 11th inning to pick up the victory.  Reliever Esmil Rogers (1-1), the fifth of six Indians pitchers, took…

The Manhattan Public Library Auditorium was the location of last night’s “What’s Happening with Medicare and Medicaid” public forum. Janet Witt, Grassroots Manager for the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, was invited to Manhattan by a joint effort from the North Central Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging, The Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice and the Manhattan Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Witt spent two hours talking about medicare, medicaid, social security and what is happening at the federal level.
