Even though many of the highlights had already been announced, K-State officially released their 2012-13 men’s basketball non-conference schedule on Tuesday.  The Cats will play in the preseason NIT with regional games at Bramlage Coliseum on November 12th & 13th.  If K-State survives the regional, they take the court for two games at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 21st & 23rd.  ESPN2 will televise the Cats on consecutive Saturdays in December, against Gonzaga in Seattle on December 15th, and Florida at the Sprint Center in KC on December 22nd.  K-State will open the campaign with exhibition…

After the original Legends Lake letter of credit that was brought to the commissioners in a recent meeting was dropped, a new letter of credit was brought forward on Monday’s meeting.  Commissioners discussed a 40 acre property located on Appleyard Road that could present a problem, but after further discussion, they approved the letter. A few different road construction projects were brought up during the meeting, including the Green Valley Road project.  Commissioners viewed the map and discussed what needs to be done.  Considering they could not come up with one easy solution to fix the road, the commissioners decided…

Named to several preseason award watch lists, K-State senior linebacker Arthur Brown received his first preseason all-America honor on Monday.  CBS Sports.com put Brown on its second team.  He was the first Wildcat in five years with triple digit tackles with 101 a year ago including nine and a half stops for loss, and also had a key interception against Baylor.  Brown was named the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year.  He also was named preseason all-Big 12, and to the watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik, Lombardi, Butkis, Bronko Nagurski, and Walter Camp awards. TAMPA, Fla. (AP)   Police say a former Fort Hays State and current Tennessee Titans player has died of an apparent suicide.  Tampa police spokeswoman Andrea Davis says officers found 25-year-old O.J. Murdock inside his car Monday morning with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.  The car was parked in front of Middleton High School, where Murdock attended school.  He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he later died. Murdock started his college career at South Carolina but left the school and played for two years at Fort Hays State.  He was signed by the Titans as an…

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP)   Former Kansas all-American Jacque Vaughn says he’s humbled and excited to become the Magic’s next head coach.  The 37-year-old takes over the team with the status of star center Dwight Howard uncertain.  Howard has asked to be traded and made it clear he doesn’t want to remain with the Magic.  Vaughn takes over for Stan Van Gundy, who was fired in May.  He has no head coaching experience, but has served as an assistant coach with San Antonio.

The West continued their dominance over the East in the 39th Kansas Shrine Bowl with 14-7 victory in Emporia, their 6th straight in the series.  A number of area athletes shined including Manhattan High grad and future K-State Wildcat wideout Deante Burton. He had 108 total yards for the West squad on rushing, receiving, and returns, and even threw a pass, althought it was intercepted.   Lining up at wide receiver for the East was Rock Creek’s Logan Miner, who will walk on at K-State.  He caught six passes for 60 yards. The sun was barely reaching over the horizon on Tuesday morning as American flags and well wishers gathered on Pierre street on the eastern side of town to send off some local heroes on the first leg of their trip to Washington D.C. as part of the Honor Flight Program. Veterans John Roberts, Rix Shanline, Norbert “Doc” Stigge and Charles Niernberger were sent off in style with a police and patriot guard escort.
