In what was a competitive game for much of the day, the West Virginia Mountaineers Women’s Basketball team marked their first trip to the Little Apple a rousing success as they used a 21-7 run down the stretch to earn a 66-52 win over Kansas State before 6,778 Saturday afternoon at Bramlage Coliseum. The NFLPA Collegiate Bowl All-Star Game has selected Kansas State Defensive Back Allen Chapman to play in its event on Thursday, January 17 at the Home Depot Center in suburban Los Angeles. Chapman finished the 2012 season with 57 tackles, 10 passes defended and five interceptions including three in one game against Oklahoma State in helping lead the Wildcats to the Big 12 Championship and an appearance in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. On Saturday January 12th, the North East  Kansas Chapter of the “Veterans of the Battle of the Battle of the Bulge” celebrated the 68th anniversary of the end of the epic World War II battle named “The Battle of the Bulge”. On Friday the Manhattan city commission met for their annual retreat and goal setting sesseion at the  Sunset Zoo Nature Exploration Center.  The meeting took a look at the past performance of the city in 2012, and discussed future goals for the new year. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback has named two Kansas trial judges to the state Court of Appeals. Brownback on Friday announced the appointments of Sedgwick County District Judge Tony Powell and Stevens County District Judge Kim Schroeder to the state’s second-highest court. Powell served in the Kansas House for eight years and was a leader among conservative, anti-abortion Republicans before becoming a judge in 2003. OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) The mystery surrounding a 300-pound concrete gorilla that showed up in a northeastern Kansas park has been partly solved. Overland Park police said Friday the owners have been identified as residents of nearby Olathe, who reported it stolen from their front yard around Dec. 15. Still unknown is who swiped the statue and took it to Overland Park, where it showed up last weekend by a gazebo in a neighborhood park.
