Miguel Rivera, Fort Riley’s senior noncommissioned officer, met with team members last week as they took a break from training.   It’s time for the annual Rodeo Reading Round-Up! The event will be  Thursday, July 26, at 10:00, featuring cowboy and cowgirl stories, and Miss Rodeo K-State, Abbey Pomeroy. Her tiara is a cowboy hat!  Two rodeo clowns are featured, Andy North and Greek Elleck, and they’ll give a demonstration and read a story. Local cowboy poet Ron Wilson will also be there , and  afterwards autographs are available from all the rodeo celebrities.  Each child who attends will receive a free ticket to the Kaw Valley Rodeo! A breakout of burglaries has some Manhattan residents taking precautions in a few residential areas. Riley County Police Captain Tim Hegarty was asked about those burglaries during the press conference portion of the Riley County Commision meeting on Monday. “We have had a series of burglaries that we believe to be related that started in April with other groups of burglaries in May and June,” Hegarty says. Hegarty says the department has recently taken action. “We’ve made conservative efforts to combat these burglaries,” Hegarty says. “The main thing is that people need to keep doors and windows locked.” According to residents…

The Manhattan Fire Department is urging citizens to be extra vigilant regarding outdoor fire safety due to the extremely dry conditions.  Due to the recent temperatures at or near 100 degrees and the lack of significant rainfall, vegetation around the area is becoming a hazardous fuel.  “With the extremely dry conditions we are experiencing, it is easy for an ignition source to start a fire that under normal conditions may not ignite,” stated Manhattan Fire Investigator Rick Stillwagon.  Stillwagon adds, “once a fire starts, it can grow exponentially and make the firefighters’ job of controlling a fire very difficult.” The…

The 2012 K-State football team has extended its school record to 15 players nominated for postseason awards.  Wildcat senior quarterback Collin Klein was named to the Manning Award watch list, which recognizes the nation’s top quarterbacks based on previous performance, but all signal callers remain eligible.  Klein previously has been put up for the Maxwell and Davey O’ Brien awards.  He helped lead the Wildcats to 10 wins and a berth in the Cotton Bowl this past season, accounting for 40 total touchdowns and over 3,000 yards of total offense.  He is one of five quarterbacks in the Big 12 and25 nationally…

(AP)   Ryan Doumit homered from both sides of the plate and drove in four runs to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 7-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.  Doumit became the third Twins player to go deep from both sides in a game. The others were Chili Davis (1992) and Roy Smalley (1986).  Doumit homered to lead off the second inning swinging left-handed.  He opened the sixth with his ninth home run, batting right-handed against reliever Tim Collins.  It was Doumit’s sixth career multihomer game, the second this season.  Hitting .354 in his…

JOLIET, Ill. (AP)   Elliott Sadler held off a charge by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. on a green-white-checker finish to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday.  Stenhouse appeared to have the stronger car and was chasing down Sadler in the closing laps of the race.  But a late caution bunched up the field for NASCAR’s version of overtime, Sadler got a push from Justin Allgaier on the restart and pulled away.  Stenhouse finished second, followed by Allgaier, Kenny Wallace and Michael Annett.  Sadler’s win came after he spent most of the week battling a stomach virus. …

(AP) Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen made four saves for his league-leading ninth shutout of the season in a scoreless draw with the New England Revolution on Saturday night.  Sporting (11-6-4) moved one point behind first-place New York in the Eastern Conference.  Nielsen’s shutout moved him one ahead of Vancouver’s Joe Cannon.  Matt Reis earned his fourth shutout for New England (6-9-5), which is just 1-7-2 on the road.  Each goalie had to make a spectacular save to preserve the draw.  Nielsen punched out Ryan Guy’s header in the 15th minute, and Reis made a diving…

(AP) Lorenzo Cain drove in three runs and Alex Gordon had three hits and scored two runs as the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 7-3 on Saturday night.  Cain delivered run-producing singles in the first and fifth innings and he had an RBI-double in the seventh.  Cain’s three RBIs matched a career high, accomplished twice in 2010 when he was with Milwaukee.  Gordon had his 34th multihit game and is hitting .352 since moving back to the Royals leadoff spot on May 27.  Luis Mendoza (4-6) made his sixth quality start in seven appearances to…
