TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Republican primary voters could reshape the Kansas Legislature as conservatives try to oust moderate GOP incumbents from the state Senate. Tuesday’s party primaries feature contested races in a majority of the 40 Senate and 125 House districts. Both chambers have Republican majorities. The hottest contests were in a dozen Senate districts in which moderate Republican incumbents faced more conservative challengers. In south-central Kansas, political newcomers Robert Tillman and Esau Freeman, of Wichita, are vying Tuesday in the Democratic primary. The winner will face 4th District Congressman Mike Pompeo in November. In the 2nd District of eastern Kansas, the Democratic primary features Ottawa farmer Scott Barnhart, Lawrence attorney Robert Eye and Topeka minister Tobias Schlingensiepen (shling-ehn-SEE’-pehn). K-State’s Erik Kynard is the silver medalist in the 2012 London Olympics in the men’s high jump. Kynard cleared the first three heights with only one miss, and then became one of two competitors to jump seven feet, seven and three quarter inches. He missed his first try at seven feet, nine inches, and Ivan Ukhov of Russia made a clean jump. Kynard would then try two greater heights in attempt to beat Ukhov but missed on both. He becomes the first Wildcat to earn an Olympic medal with remaining eligibility since Thane Baker in 1952.
Another Chapter closes in the Riley County capital murder case of Luis Aguirre. On Tuesday afternoon Judge Meryl Wilson sentenced Aguirre to Life in Prison withouth the possibility of parole as mandated by the verdict put forward by the jury a few weeks ago. Aguirre murdered his 18-year-old exgirlfriend Tanya Maldonado and their 13-month-old son Juan in October of 2009 and buried them in a shallow grave nearby his residence in Ogden. Manhattan Area Planning Board members were an agreeable bunch Monday evening, recommending approval in three different cases. The group unanimously approved a request for annexation of the Reserve Addition, in the area of a 56 acre tract of land generally located west of the Colbert Hills Golf Course. They also voted seven to zero in a rezoning matter in that same area, following a public hearing. And a preliminary plat for the same property was approved unanimously, with three conditions. Two people were arrested at the Manhattan Town Center on drug-related charges late Monday morning. Samantha French, 23, of Carbondale and Shawn Creollo, 37, of Topeka were taken into custody by Riley county police on a variety of charges, involving methamphetamine, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. French’s bond was set at $5,000 and Creollo faces a $3,000 bond. Outstanding warrants reportedly were involved.

Kynard will be among 14 competitors after tying for third in the prelims with a leap just over seven feet, six inches. NORMAN, Okla. (AP) Starting offensive guard Tyler Evans is getting an MRI to determine the extent of a knee injury. Coach Bob Stoops revealed after Monday’s practice that Evans was running down the field during the Sooners’ first practice of training camp Friday when he was hurt. Evans is Oklahoma’s most experienced lineman left after starting center Ben Habern gave up the sport just last week because of lingering neck and back issues. Stoops calls the loss of Habern and potentially Evans “a couple of tough breaks but we’ve still got guys in there that we really like.” Freshman…
