WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita police are investigating whether speed and alcohol were factors in a one-car crash that killed two men. The accident happened around 2:30 a.m. Thursday in western Wichita. Police say the car struck a culvert, then went airborne and hit a power pole and utility lines. Police said the driver, 21-year-old Marcus McClellan, died at the scene. His 22-year-old passenger, Devan Krausch, was thrown from the car and died later at a hospital. A witness reported seeing a car speeding, followed by a flash from the falling power lines. GODDARD, Kan. (AP) A family in south-central Kansas has learned that a two-inch layer of ice over a frigid pond isn’t enough to support a small dog. KWCH-TV reports a 7-year-old beagle named Bear slipped under a fence around a wastewater lagoon at his owners’ home Wednesday and fell through the ice. Owner Patricia Wilson, of Goddard, says she tried to rescue Bear, but she fell into the water, too. JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (AP) Fifty-seven years after he served with the Army in Korea, a northeastern Kansas man has finally received official recognition in the form of a medal. Donald Hamilton received the Korea Defense Service Medal during a ceremony at the American Legion. The medal was created in 2002 for members of the U.S. military who served in the Republic of Korea after the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement. MARYSVILLE, Kan. (AP) Time is running out to rescue a train station that has fallen into disrepair in the northeast Kansas town of Marysville. The Kansas City Star reports that Union Pacific offered to give the 1929 building and the land it sits on to the city. But the plan by the nonprofit group trying to save it, Landmark Enterprises, includes a theater on adjoining land, also owned by the railroad. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) The senior associate dean for clinical affairs will take over in February as executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas Medical Center. Officials said Wednesday that Dr. Douglas Girod was selected from among three candidates to fill the position. He replaces Barbara Atkinson, who retired in June as dean of the medical school and executive vice chancellor of the medical center in Kansas City, Kan. Individual funds from various departments make up the yearly budget amendment. During Thursday’s Riley County Commission meeting, the budget amendment for 2012 was reviewed during a public hearing. A local man was taken into custody Wednesday morning when he caused significant damage to a hospital room. Riley County Police told reporters on Thursday that they were called to the Mercy Regional Health Center Emergency Department around 8:00 a.m Wednesday on a report that an angry and out of control patient had damaged a window and a wall in one of the department’s rooms. Police arrested Benjamin Lucas Kempthorne (37) of 24 Waterway PL. in Manhattan, and charged him with criminal damage to property. Damage to the hospital was estimated to be $11,000.
