For the fourth time in seven weeks, K-State senior guard Rodney McGruder has been named the Big 12 player of the week. McGruder passes first team all-American Michael Beasley for most weekly league honors in a single season for a Wildcat. Beasley was tabbed Big 12 player of the week three times during the 2007-2008 season. McGruder posted back-to-back 20-point scoring efforts in a pair of K-State wins last week. A former K-State Wildcat made a highlight reel play on Saturday afternoon in the East-West Shrine Game on Saturday afternoon in St. Petersburg, FL, but it wasn’t Collin Klein. Second team all-American cornerback Nigel Malone picked off former Louisiana Tech quarterback Colby Cameron in the second quarter, and returned it 30 yards to the house. The TD put the West up 21-3, en route to a 28-13 victory. Meanwhile, Klein did lead the East squad in rushing with 35 yards, but struggled throwing the football. The race for the USD 383 school board election has gained another candidate. Pat Hudgins filed for candidacy Friday afternoon, and becomes the fourth person to file for a race that has three open spots. Hudgins says that she initially tried for a vacant seat on the board last spring, but fell short. However, that experience really sparked an interest in what she could possibly do in the future. Her involvement in various classrooms in the area helped nurture that desire to do more, and Hudgins states that that same passion got people that knew her to encourage her to…

The Tribe edged out Newton by five points on Saturday in the team standings, after the Railroaders topped MHS at the Tournament of Champions last weekend. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A former Kansas State University English professor in prison for killing his ex-wife in 2003 is challenging the legality of his sentence. Fifty-six-year-old Thomas E. Murray is serving 25 years to life in prison for the stabbing death of Carmin Ross at her home north of Lawrence. At the time, Murray and Ross were fighting over custody of their daughter, who was 4 at the time. On Tuesday, Murray’s attorneys will argue the attorneys who represented him at the murder trial did not provide an adequate defense. Members of the Manhattan community came together Saturday night at the Manhattan High school east campus to honor the memory and the dream of the late Martin Luther King Jr. The MLK memorial event sought to celebrate the ideals of Dr. King through an inspirational speech, followed by a candlelit march that sought to reenact those marches that took place during the civil rights struggle. The speech was delivered by Dr. Glenda Overstreet, who is a columnist for the Topeka Capitol Journal as well as President of the Kansas State chapter of the NAACP. Riley County Police arrested a Manhattan man in connection with an altercation that took place early Saturday morning. According to a press release from Riley County Police Public Information officer and Sargeant Brad Ingalls, 33-year old Shannon Ayers of Manhattan flagged down an officer shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday and said he had been struck by a male subject identified as 47-year old Anthony Murphy also of Manhattan.
