Fire caused considerable damage to a garage belonging to the city of Manhattan Sunday. $43,300 damage to the structure and contents is reported to the garage at 5166 Wildcat Creek Road, which was fully involved when firefighters arrived shortly before noon. Damaged in the fire were a garage on the property, another garage on an adjacent property, a 1996 Crownline boat, a 2000 Coleman Bayside Elite camper, various tools, a lawnmower, and go-kart. Manhattan, Riley County, and Fort Riley fire departments responded. The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no injuries reported.

Not satisfied with being the first former K-State Wildcat to play in the US Open in a quarter century, Aaron Watkins stayed in contention the entire way.  The 29-year old Nationwide tour player made the cut on Friday, which Jim Colbert last did in 1984, and didn’t fade on the weekend.  Watkins shot a 2-over-par 72 on Saturday, and a 1-over-par 71 on Sunday to finish at +6 for the tournament.  He tied for 15th place in his first major, five shots behind eventual winner Webb Simpson. With nine holes to play, the first annual Colbert Charity Classic looked like it would go to a former K-Stater.  Robert Streb led the first Adams Golf Pro Tour Series event by three shots at Colbert Hills on Saturday going into the back nine.  That’s when Jimmie Marshall, a native Canadian, would take over.  Marshall eagled the 10th hole, and then proceeded to birdie six straight holes to finish with an 8-under par 28 coming in at Colbert Hills.  He won the tournament at 16-under par, three shots ahead of Streb, who finished at 13-under.  Marshall earned a $20,000 paycheck from the Adams…

LOUIS (AP)   Yuniesky Betancourt hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 15th inning, lifting the Kansas City Royals a 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.  Betancourt had put the Royals ahead in the 14th with an RBI double but closer Jonathan Broxton (1-1) failed to hold the lead.  Down to their last strike in the ninth, Billy Butler homered for the Royals to tie it.   Jarrod Dyson began 15th inning with a bunt single off St. Louis reliever Eduardo Sanchez (0-1). Commemorating the ending of slavery in the U.S., the Juneteenth celebration was started on June 19, 1865.  Major General Gordon Granger landed at Galveston, Texas to announce the news that slavery had been abolished.  Once this was announced, the reactions of pure shock and jubilation sparked a huge event that became an official holiday in 1980. Manhattan held their annual Juneteenth celebration June 15th and 16th in City Park.  The celebration featured a basketball tournament, a parade, numerous vendors,  live entertainment, a guest speaker, and much much more. LOUIS (AP) Mike Moustakas cut down Tyler Greene at the plate to end the game, capping a wild ninth inning and preserving the Kansas City Royals’ 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night. Greene reached on a two-out infield hit for his third single of the game, stole second and advanced on catcher Bryan Pena’s wild throw. The renovation efforts began in January, but November brings the estimated change in name for the Clarion Hotel here in Manhattan. The Clarion will be taking on the name of Four Points by Sheraton.  This will be the first of this classification in the state of Kansas.
