HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) The Women’s Christian Temperance Union is back at this year’s Kansas State Fair, still preaching its message that alcohol is dangerous. It’s the 100th straight year that the group has been at the fair. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union led the drive for prohibition, which was in place across the country from 1920 to 1933. Kansas had statewide prohibition from 1881 to 1948, longer than any other state. The Hutchinson News reports that the organization has 125 members this year. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Topeka police say the deaths of man and woman in the apartment during the weekend were a murder-suicide. The bodies of Kahlyn Hiene (22) and Jeremiah Campbell (26), both of Topeka, were found in their apartment Saturday morning. On Monday, police said investigators determined the deaths were a murder-suicide, with Campbell shooting Hiene and then himself. No other details, including a possible motive, were released. Officers were dispatched to the apartment complex after a tenant reported finding a bullet hole in the wall of her apartment. The couple was found dead in an adjacent apartment.

DERBY, Kan. (AP) Crews have recovered a body from the burned-out wreckage of a home in south-central Kansas. The fire near Derby was reported by a passerby shortly before 2 a.m. Monday. Sedgwick County Fire District Division Chief Doug Williams the flames were visible from several miles away, and firefighters were unable to get inside. Authorities have not released the victim’s name, but relatives identified her to The Wichita Eagle as a 53-year-old woman who lived alone in the home. For the second time in his career, K-State senior quarterback Collin Klein has been tabbed the Big 12 offensive player of the week.  Klein passed 9 of 11 for 210 yards and a touchdown this past Saturday against Miami.  His 23.3 yards per pass completiton was the highest at K-State since 2005, and his efficiency rating is 3rd in the Big 12 and 10th in the NCAA.  Klein also ran for 71 yards on 22 carries and three more scores, the 10th time in his career he has scored at least three rushing TD’s.  He also was named Big 12 player…

Food safety training, new museum exhibitions, and a new dog park are just a few of the new opportunities and amenities discussed during Monday’s Riley County Commissioner meeting. Riley County Historical Museum Director, Cheryl Collins, shared information regarding the “Forces:  the Shaping of Manhattan, Fort Riley and Kansas State University” educational exhibit.  This exhibit opened on September 7th at the Flint Hills Discovery Center, and will run through January 13, 2013.  Collins mentioned the temporary exhibit even sparked a tour.  Thursday, September 13th, beginning at 6 p.m. will be the walking tour of historical downtown Manhattan.  The tour is free…

During their meeting on Monday, the Pottawatomie County Commission opened the eight bids that were made on the new EMS building. County Administrator Robert Reece read each bid out to commissioners. The commission had two different options available for bid, one of wood construction, the other metal.  This was to give options as to the best way to proceed. Other items on the agenda included proclaiming September as Mental Health Recovery Month, an update on the law enforcement center and then special assessments for Whispering Meadows along with the Elbo Creek Estates. Two people were taken to area hospitals Saturday following an accident on K-99, six miles south of Wamego. The accident occurred shortly before 9:30 Saturday night. The Kansas Highway patrol reports Jerry Anstey, 40, of Alma was taken to Stormont Vail in Topeka and later to the University of Kansas Hospital and Clayton Fox, 25,  of Richland, Missouri was taken to Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan. According to KHP, a 2004 Chrysler P-T Cruiiser driven by Anstey was northbound on K-99 approaching a curve and travelling at a high rate of speed. Wichita Falls, Texas product Marcus Foster has become the second commitment to Bruce Weber and K-State in the class of 2013, according to GoPowercat.com.  The 6 foot, 2 inch 185 pound shooting guard was recruited by Wildcat assistant Alvin Brooks III, and chose K-State over offers from Oklahoma, Cal, Creighton, SMU, and Lehigh.  Foster averaged 24.2 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game during his junior year at Wichita Falls Hirschi.  K-State is also reportedly hot on the trail of Foster’s AAU teammate, Jeffrey Carroll, a three-star small forward in the 2013 class.

(AP)   Matt Ryan threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns, one of them to Tony Gonzalez in his return to Kansas City, and the Atlanta Falcons pounded the short-handed Chiefs 40-24 on Sunday.  Ryan also ran for a TD, while Julio Jones caught six passes for 108 yards and two scores.   The Falcons took advantage of a Chiefs defense missing four starters.  Pro Bowl linebacker Tamba Hali was suspended for an unspecified violation of the league’s substance-abuse policy, and three others were injured.  Still, Kansas City matched Atlanta most of the first half, trailing 20-17…
