CHICAGO (AP) Mike Moustakas stroked a go-ahead single in the 10th inning to lift the Kansas City Royals to a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. The Royals plated both their runs with two outs in the 10th off Brett Myers (2-3), the seventh of eight White Sox pitchers in the game. The rally started after Alcides Escobar was thrown out, leaving the bases empty and two outs. Myers walked Billy Butler, who was replaced by pinch runner Jarrod Dyson. Salvador Perez, Moustakas and Jeff Francoeur then hit consecutive singles, the last two driving in runs. …

A hearing was held this Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. in Riley County District court for Cole Drake. Drake was charged with the homicide of fellow Manhattan High School student Tyler Dowling in April of last year. A motion to suppress was denied on August 21st, and the next court appearance will be Monday September 24th. Monday’s hearing was settled in chambers and Drake’s lawyer could not comment at this time. Stay tuned to KMAN for information on the result of this hearing, and coverage of Drake’s trial at the end of this month.
The Chicago Teachers’ Union announced on Sunday night that it is going on strike for the first time in 25 years. The union announced that talks with the city school district failed Sunday night.
A motorcycle police officer escorting President Barack Obama’s motorcade has died after being hit by a pickup truck on Interstate 95. He was preparing to shut down a portion of the roadway near West Palm Beach, Fla. when he was struck.
A new federal grant for the airport, and the upcoming metropolitan planning organization will be on the plate for Tuesday night’s Manhattan city Commission meeting. Manhattan Commissioners will be looking at funding and contracts for improving the Manhattan airport apron, and part of that process will include accepting a grant from the FAA for $1, 890, 734.00. Commissioners are also looking deeper into the MPO process as they consider staff suggestions for two maps. A new exhibit featuring the history of the local area has opened at the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Forces: The Shaping of Manhattan, Fort Riley, and Kansas State University showcases the three entities that make this area so special. Visitors to this temporary exhibit can step through time back to the mid 1800s and see how a small frontier fort and a small group of settlers made this area what it is today. The nation took notice when K-State throttled Miami 52-13 on Saturday, and the Cats have risen up the ranks in both the AP and Coaches’ poll. K-State jumps six spots in both surveys, and the Cats are now #14 according to the coaches, and the media has voted them #15. For the first time in school history, the K-State volleyball is 9-0 to begin the season, and eight of their wins have been in straight sets. The Cats though were kept off balance by Utah State on Saturday night at Ahearn Fieldhouse, but prevailed 25-22, 25-23, and 25-17.
