COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP)   Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel says he has separated from his wife. In a statement released Friday, Pinkel says he and Vicki, his wife of nearly 40 years, separated earlier this year. He thanks friends and family for their support and says “I would ask that you please respect the privacy of the entire Pinkel family during this difficult time.” The Pinkels met at Kent State, where he played football. Elizabeth Herrs of Rock Creek won her 2nd straight Kansas Relays title Friday in the High School Girls Javelin. Very much like last year, the University of Oklahoma signee came into the event trailing in the state rankings behind Danni Plank of Gardner-Edgerton. DETROIT (AP)   The Detroit Tigers have acquired right-hander Zach Miner from the Kansas City Royals for cash. He will report to Double-A Erie this weekend. The Tigers announced the move Friday. Miner, who turned 30 last month, appeared in 157 games for the Tigers from 2006-09, including 35 starts. He went 25-20 with a 4.24 ERA over that span but hasn’t pitched in the majors since. He had surgery on his right elbow in May 2010 and signed a minor league deal with the Royals before last season.

FORT RILEY, Kan. – A Fort Riley Soldier has died in Afghanistan. Capt. Michael Braden, 31, was pronounced dead at a medical facility on Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, after being found unresponsive in his living quarters Wednesday morning. The cause of death is under investigation. Braden was a signal officer assigned to the 1st Infantry Division Headquarters which is currently deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. This was Braden’s second deployment with the division. In 2010, he deployed for a yearlong tour to Basra, Iraq. He also deployed to Qatar for five months in 2005. LANSING, Kan. (AP) A 59-year-old child sex offender who escaped from the Lansing Correctional Facility on Wednesday is still on the run. Corrections department spokesman Jeremy Barclay said Friday law enforcement officials are devoting considerable time and resources to the search for Gary Leslie Furthmyer. Furthmyer escaped from his minimum security assignment at a steam plant in Lansing on Wednesday. He escaped the same day that four state inmates broke out of the Ottawa County jail. HAYS, Kan. (AP) A new northwest Kansas home for the elderly will begin moving in new residents on May 1. The Via Christi Village in Hays is the consolidation of two nursing homes in Hays and St. John’s. Residents who plan to live in the 96-bed facility and their families were given tours of the home this week. An open house for the public is planned for Sunday.
