TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The second of nine people accused in the shooting death of a Topeka woman goes on trial this week. Seventeen-year-old Daquan Wilkins’ trial on murder and other charges begins Monday in Shawnee County Court. He’s accused of participating in the shooting death of 40-year-old Natalie Gibson and the wounding of Gibson’s partner, 42-year-old Lori Allison. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A 22-year-old man working on a highway improvement project on Interstate 470 near Topeka died after he was hit by a car. The Kansas Highway Patrol says Curtis James Harlan of Arma died on impact Sunday. The accident occurred Sunday under an interstate bridge in Topeka. Harlan worked for R.A. Knapp Construction Inc., a Kansas City, Kan., contractor hired by the state transportation department to work on the pavement repair project. The patrol says the cause of the collision is still under investigation. The accident closed a section of Interstate 470 for several hours Sunday.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will return to his hometown in November to address the annual meeting of the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce. It will be the second Wichita appearance this year for Gates, who is also a former director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He was on hand in May when the Kansas National Guard renamed its intelligence complex at McConnell Air Force Base in his honor. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Aircraft maker Airbus is reaching out to Kansas aviation suppliers with a Wichita event called the Air Capital Supplier Summit. Monday’s event is hosted by U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran and Airbus Americas chairman Allan McArtor. It comes just months after the aircraft maker’s biggest competitor, Boeing, announced plans to close its defense plant in Wichita. The conference is designed to increase business between Kansas companies and Airbus. More than 200 representatives from about 90 companies are expected to meet with Airbus representatives at the National Center for Aviation Training. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Emergency crews have rescued a man who became trapped inside a concrete mixer at a Topeka business. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the worker was cleaning a stationary concrete mixer shortly before noon Saturday when he slipped and fell into it. Emergency responders were able to get him out of the mixer within half an hour. Fire Department investigator Alan Stahl says the only opening on the mixer is 24 inches wide and about 20 feet above the ground. The unidentified worker sustained what officials characterized as non-life-threatening injuries.
WICHITA, Kan. (AP) Wichita police say an officer interrupted a traffic stop conducted by a man impersonating a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper. KWCH-TV reports the officer saw what he thought was a routine traffic stop just after 1 a.m. Saturday at Interstate 135 and Harry and pulled up behind what looked like a Highway Patrol car. A man had pulled over a female driver and was at her car when the officer pulled up. Police say the impostor ran to his car, turned on a siren and took off at a high rate of speed. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) The Kansas secretary of state’s office says a state House candidate may now run as an independent after a lost filing form kept him off the ballot as a Democrat. The office confirmed Friday that Larry Meeker, of Lake Quivira, gathered enough signatures from registered voters in the 17th House District to be listed on the November general election ballot. Meeker was the only Democrat seeking to enter the race in the Kansas City area district. Democrats contend the secretary of state’s office lost Meeker’s original filing form after it was delivered to Topeka on the deadline.…
A professor from the Kansas State University college of business says he’s looking for justice. K-State Professor Tom Wright says it all started in 2009 with teacher evaluations from his students for an upper level business management class. In January 2010 Wright noticed some possible tampering with the evaluations, and launched an investigation in conjuction with the director of the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning Vicki Clegg. The investigation uncovered evidence of tampering which changed favorable marks to lower evalutions.
