An educator who has taught both kindergarteners and college students during her career will be Kansas State University’s next dean of the College of Education. Debbie Mercer, a professor and the college’s associate dean for teacher education, will begin her role as dean July 1. She succeeds Michael Holen, who announced in June 2011 that he would begin phased retirement at the end of the 2011-2012 academic year. “As Debbie Mercer takes up the role as dean of the College of Education, it will be great for Kansas State University,” said Provost April Mason. “She will be the college’s leader…
MANATTAN, Kan. (AP) Kansas State athletic director John Currie admitted to having some differences with coach Frank Martin over the years. The two men didn’t always see eye to eye. One thing they agreed on Tuesday: There was no rift in their relationship. “John has been great,” Martin said during a conference call shortly after being introduced as the new coach at South Carolina. “It’s unfortunate that I make a difficult decision and everyone’s got to figure out a way to blame someone for the decision. That’s not fair to anybody.” Currie said he wished Martin well as he tries…

Martin was introduced Tuesday as the Gamecocks new coach, leaving Kansas State after four NCAA tournament appearances in five years. Martin says while “some people run away from challenges,” he runs to them, “I always have.” South Carolina has been to the NCAA just once since 1998, but the Gamecocks gave Martin plenty of time to turns things turnaround. He was given a six-year, $12.3 million deal. Martin was 117-54 in five years with the Wildcats. They reached the…

Chen, a 34-year-old left-hander, went 12-8 with a 3.77 ERA in 25 starts last year and is 24-15 the past two seasons. Yost said right-hander Luke Hochevar, the 2011…
Taxes are an important way for cities to do a lot of things, and last night’s Manhattan City Commission meeting held a discussion on the possible renewal or replacement of 2002’s Riley County Roads and Jobs half cent sales tax. Three options were considered by the Commission; the first would be highly similar to the original, generating $2.7 million, with $1.5 million going to Riley County. Option 2 would generate $800,000 more in revenue, and option three would generate only $2.5 million and require separate ballot questions for the City and County. Option two quickly emerged as a clear favorite. The…
