Former Manhattan High student Kelsy Schoen received a $1,000 academic scholarship on Thursday courtesy of the Kansas Sheriffs Association. The Kansas Sheriffs Association awards $10,000 worth of scholarships every year to eligible members or family members of law enforcement officers. The scholarship committee consists of eight members and is chaired by Osborne County Sheriff, Curtis Miner. A total of eight $1,000 scholarships are given out each year in addition to the $2,000 Sheriff Matt Samuels Award. Kelsy’s application was sponsored by her father and current director of the Riley County Police Department Brad Schoen.

A week before a Sprint Center matchup with Florida, the K-State men’s basketball team will square off with another national power. The matchup was already announced, but the Cats will meet Gonzaga on Saturday, December 15th in the Battle in Seattle at Key Arena. Tickets go on sale September 17th. The Bulldogs like K-State are coming off a 2nd round NCAA tournament appearance, with a loss to Ohio State ending their season at 26-7. The United States Supreme Court has issued its ruling to uphold the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) on Thursday morning . The health care plan was passed in 2010, and was brought to SCOTUS under the challenge of whether or not the Act was constitutional. Former Riley County and K-State standout Amy Mortimer will start her path towards the London Olympics on Thursday afternoon. Mortimer will run in the 1500 meter prelims at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon at 5:50pm central time. She was a multi-time NCAA all-American as a Wildcat in both track and cross country, setting a number of school records. She won nine state track championships at Riley County, and won the 3A state cross country title all four years of her high school career. The Manhattan Ogden school board meeting had a few discussion items, but mostly they passed action items and moved on. There were five items for the board to consisder in leu of construction.
