TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas officials will be in England this week promoting the state’s aviation industry. Sen. Jerry Moran, Gov. Sam Brownback and Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George will be discussing Kansas aviation at the Famborough International Airshow near London. Leaders of Wichita’s Spirit AeroSystems, Hawker Beechcraft, Cessna Aircraft, Boeing, Airbus and Bombardier also will be there. Brownback says the Kansas delegation is working to promote current companies and recruit more companies to Wichita. The Wichita Eagle reports Wichita builds and delivers more than 40 percent of the world’s general aviation airplanes.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) Reno County health officials have proposed increasing several inspection and permit fees to make up for a state grant that was lost in a line-item veto from Gov. Sam Brownback. The Reno County Commission has tentatively approved the fee hikes, and formally takes up the issue in August. The Hutchinson News reports that the increased fees will be for such services as inspections of rural home water and wastewater systems and inspecting private water wells or septic system installations. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A group that publicizes Kansas history is planning a three-day celebration in Topeka next month to mark the 150th anniversary of the formation of the first unit of black soldiers to go into battle during the Civil War. The Kansas Fever Committee plans to have events starting Aug. 3. The site will be Cushinberry Park, near the national historic site dedicated to the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic Brown v. Board decision in 1954 declaring segregated schools unconstitutional. The celebration will honor the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteers, which formed in 1862 and went into its first battle in…

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A University of Kansas professor is conducting class at a popular Lawrence brewery to discuss just what constitutes extreme weather. Nathaniel Brunsell, an associate professor of geography and atmospheric science, will lead the discussion Tuesday at Free State Brewery in Lawrence. The event is prompted by recent weeks of extreme heat conditions across Kansas and the Midwest. The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) has named former Manhattan High standout Zach Nelson an academic all-American.  Nelson spent the past two years at Cowley College in Ark City.  He carried a 3.64 GPA and tied for second on the Tigers with 30 three points shots made this season & had a 3.9 points per game scoring average.  Nelson will continue his college career at Friends University in Wichita. In his high school days, Nelson led Manhattan to the 2010 6A state tournament.

Riley County Police reported Monday morning that sometime around 2:45 A.M. on Friday, a white Toyota Prius almost struck an MP at Fort Riley.  The vehicle was headed east bound through the Ogden gate towards Manhattan. The vehicle was found a few hours later at the Bubble Wash.  When the driver spotted the police, they fled the scene onto Stagg Hill Road.  Once reaching Stagg Hill, the driver ran, leaving the woman passenger alone with the police.  The passenger, Kristina Harrison (26) of Wamego, was arrested for obstruction. A trio of K-State senior football players were nominated for postseason awards annnounced on Monday.  Wildcat quarterback Collin Klein was named to the Maxwell Award watch list, which is given to the nation’s most outstanding player.  Klein burst onto the national scene last season with 1, 141 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns, plus he threw for 1, 918 yards and 13 scores.  Darren Sproles was the last K-Stater nominated for the award in 2004, and Michael Bishop was a finalist in 1998. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)   Royals minor leaguer Wil Myers knocked in three runs and Detroit prospect Nick Castellanos added a three-run homer during a nine-run sixth inning, and to lead the U.S. team to a 17-5 rout of the World team in the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday.  Castellanos was the game’s MVP, but it was Myers who drew the biggest reaction.  The 21-year-old outfielder received a standing ovation from an adoring sellout crowd that has been pining for his arrival all season. Myers is hitting .315 with 14 homers in 48 games at Triple-A Omaha.

DETROIT (AP)   Delmon Young homered for the fourth consecutive game, Prince Fielder hit a three-run shot and Jhonny Peralta homered and drove in three runs in the Detroit Tigers 7-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday to complete a sweep of the three-game weekend series.  The power display backed Max Scherzer (8-5), who allowed a run and five hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out seven.  It was the Tigers’ season-high fifth-straight win and put them two games over .500 – heading into the All-Star break – for the first time since April 25 (10-8). …
