Manhattan-Ogden area 1st Grade Teacher Usha Reddi has announced her bid for the 6th District Kansas Board of education seat. Reddi says she’s ready to take on the position, and has a proven background on educational issues.  Reddi is a spokesperson for the National Education Association.  Reddi says she wants to ensure that education is properly funded for better school performance, and informed citizens.

The 4th Infantry Combat Brigade has landed safely into Afghanistan.  Captain Melody Faulkenberry reports that almost everyone is in place, and the Dragon Bridage  is now going through the transfer of authority to take over operations. Captain Faulkenberry says it is a dynamic and interesting place, and she will keep us updated as the tour continues.

Aaron Estabrook is announcing his Democratic candidacy to represent the 67th District in the Kansas State House of Representatives. Estabrook is a former K-State graduate, and Army service member who deployed to Afghanistan with the 1st Infantry Regiment. Estabrook says he believes in protecting education, fiscal responsibility, and legislating without political posturing.

WACO, Texas (AP)   Arkansas scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on hit batters with the bases loaded and the Razorbacks beat Baylor 5-4 on Sunday to force a decisive third game in the super regional.  Arkansas (43-20) entered the ninth inning trailing 4-3 with Baylor closer Max Garner (3-3) on the mound.  After loading the bases he hit pinch-hitter Jimmy Bosco with a 2-2 fastball to tie the game. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP)   Heavy rain swamping Carolina Stadium postponed the second game of the NCAA super regional series between Oklahoma and South Carolina on Sunday night.  The game, which was tied 0-0 in the sixth inning, is scheduled to resume Monday at 4:05 p.m. If a third game is necessary, it would start at 7:05 p.m.  The two-time defending national champion Gamecocks (44-17) are a win away from their third consecutive College World Series.  They beat Oklahoma 5-0 in the first game of the best-of-three series on Saturday.  Officials first brought the tarp on the field at 8:26 p.m.…

PITTSBURGH (AP)   Andrew McCutchen homered and drove in three runs, A.J. Burnett won his fifth consecutive start and the Pittsburgh Pirates finished their first sweep of an AL team in more than a decade by beating the Kansas City Royals 3-2 Sunday.  McCutchen hit an RBI double in the first inning and hit a two-run homer in the third, giving Burnett (6-2) and three relievers enough support for Pittsburgh to win its fourth in a row.  This was the 50th interleague series the Pirates had played since taking three in a row from the Cleveland Indians June 15-17, 2001. …

KMAN news has just confirmed the house fire in Riley reported on Sunday evening was that of Riley County USD 378 Superintendent Brad Starnes. Riley County Fire department Chief Pat Collins reports that the house was almost completely destroyed along with two of the family’s vehicles.  The Starnes family escaped injury thanks to a home fire alarm. Two firefighters were injured fighting the blaze, but were treated and released on scene by emergency personnel. Collins says it looks like the fire started in the garage area on the southwest of the home, and spread to the rest of the house.  Nearly 50…

The  Defense Authorization Bill is still being mulled over by officials in Washington D.C. John Armbrust, the Kansas Governor’s Military Council Executive Director, says the bill has already been cleared by Congressional representatives.  Components of the bill include a continued hold on raises for civilian workers, and a 1.7% pay raise for military personnel. According to Armbrust, the house and senate also have different intentions for the bill involving Tri-Care fees and Pharmacy co-pays.

U.S. Senator, Jerry Moran, says he created his Start Up Act last year due to frustrations with the flagging economy.  The Start Up Act covers areas such as research, and the regulatory environment in which businesses operate. Senator Moran says the bill is focused on reducing national debt, growing the economy, and stimulating job growth. Besides the Start Up Bill, Senator Moran also supports the Farm Bill and the NBAF facility.
