The Fifth Annual Konza Reptile Breeders Expo had a full crowd at the Clarion Hotel on Sunday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. A wide variety of reptiles were not only on display, but also up for sale. Geckos, lizards, frogs, turtles, and scorpions were some of the various pets available for purchase. The goal for the event was to widen the potential market of the Midwest region for vendors to buy, sell and trade product. Saturday morning at about 9 am, a number of people could be seen walking from the Manhattan Town Center Mall along a designated path, ending at the Catholic Charities and Housing and Credit Counseling on Poyntz. This was the United Way of Riley County’s kick off campaign for 2012, where they announced their goal to meet. Riley County United Way director Lee Ann Desper told KMAN that they are looking at $525,000 as their goal. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Revenue Secretary Nick Jordan says the state’s tax collections missed expectations by $14.9 million in August. Jordan attributed the numbers released Friday to flat individual income tax collections and the beginning of payments on bonds issued by the state. Total tax collections for August came to $438.7 million. The state had expected to collect $453.6 million. Jordan said that while individual income tax collections were flat, sales taxes beat expectations by $6.4 million. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) A Democratic primary for a seat in the Kansas House has been decided by the flip of a coin. The Aug. 7 election for the 65th District seat in northeastern Kansas ended in a tie between Melody Saxton and Tom Brungardt, both of Junction City and both with 206 votes. Saxton won a coin flip Friday by the State Board of Canvassers as the results of the primaries were certified. She’ll face Republican Allan Rothlisberg in November. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Two school systems in Kansas are among nearly 900 nationwide planning to apply for a slice of nearly $400 million in grants from the U.S. Education Department. The federal agency announced Friday that the Topeka School District and the Southwest Plains Regional Service Center are among those slated to participate in the Race to the Top-District competition. The Southwest Plains Regional Service Center is in Sublette and provides area schools with a variety of resources.
