ARLINGTON, Kan. (AP) Federal inspectors have arrived at the scene of a central Kansas grain elevator explosion that injured one worker. The explosion was reported early Thursday at the Cairo Coop in Arlington, about 15 miles southwest of Hutchinson. Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson said one employee was taken to a Wichita hospital with burns. The Hutchinson News reports that the worker was seriously injured, and that investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have arrived at the scene. READING, Kan. (AP) Residents of an east-central Kansas town hit hard by a tornado last year are seeing more signs of recovery. More than half of the 101 homes and almost all of the businesses in Reading (REHD’-ing) were destroyed May 21 when the EF-3 tornado smashed parts of Lyon County. One person was killed. KVOE-AM reports that residents held ribbon-cuttings this week for three businesses. The Miracle Cafe and Citizens State Bank and Trust had both been closed by the tornado. A couple of chemicals mixed together improperly at Justin Hall on the the K-State campus this afternoon brought the Manhattan Fire Department, Kansas State police, and public safety officials to the scene. Jessica Brooks with the K-State police department tells KMAN a chemical cloud formed, prompting the alert to the different agencies. However the problem, reported at about 1:40 in the afternoon was taken care of within 15 or 20 minutes. Brooks indicates to her knowledge Justin Hall was not evacuated.
A Manhattan man announced during Thursday’s Riley County commission meeting his intentions to run for County Commission, the District 2 position. Paul Foltz, a registered republican, made his intentions public, although Elections Supervisor Jolene Keck says Foltz has not yet filed his declaration forms with the county clerk’s office. Alvan Johnson currently holds the district 2 position and has not yet indicated his intentions whether to file for re-election. It’s been a packed courtroom all day long in a Riley county hearing involving a Manhattan teenager charged with first degree murder. The hearing the next two days is partly to deterimine whether Cole Drake should be prosecuted as a juvenile or adult in the case. Drake was charged last year in the first degree murder and aggravated burglary case involving the April shooting death of Manhattan High student, 14 year old Tyler Dowling. The Kansas Department of Transportation has selected seven construction projects for funding through the Access Management Program, including one in the Manhattan area which has received a lot of attention. These projects, announced Wednesday morning, are scheduled for state fiscal year 2014, with a total estimated cost of $4.5 million. Construction of westbound double left turn lanes are planned at U.S. 24/Tuttle Creek Boulevard and McCall Road. There are also plans in Pottawatomie County for Intersection Improvements at U.S. 24 and Flush Road lengthening the existing eastbound left turn lane on U.S. 24 and constructing an acceleration lane on westbound U.S. 24 for vehicles southbound…

(AP) A Kansas Senate committee has endorsed a redistricting bill that is likely to give the state’s senior Republican congresswoman a more Democratic district, and move the Manhattan area out of her district. Reapportionment Committee members who supported the measure Wednesday didn’t mention opposition to it from Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins, who represents the 2nd District of eastern Kansas in the U.S. House. Instead, they said it accounted for changes in population over the past decade while creating relatively compact districts. A man convicted in Riley County nearly 30 years ago for second degree murder is up for parole the next month. Michael Long, 58, began serving his sentence in March of 1983, in connection with a case in August of 1982. Long has served most of his time at Larned correctional Mental Health Facility. Public comment sessions are set for next month; March 19 at City Hall in Kansas City, the 20th at the Finney State office building in Wichita, and the 21st at the Landon State office building in Topeka. A federal warrant has been served on a Manhattan man in connection with an arson charge from nearly two years ago. Christopher Luke Kenny Jr., 24, was taken into custody by Riley County Police Tuesday evening. The case concerns a dumpster fire on Vattier Street on April 18, 2010. The U.S. Attorney’s office is handling the prosecution and local officials had no further information at this time. Jim Cross, the media liason with the U-S Attorney’s office, told KMAN Wednesday, he has no more information at this time but will provide it when it becomes available.
