According to reporting from The Topeka Capital-Journal, the contract between the consulting firm and Manhattan’s National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility worth $355,236 was among the contracts on the chopping block for the Trump administration’s efficiency initiative. The contract, with Berney Associates out of Maryland, is for “NBAF leadership development, coaching, team-building and strategy services,” according to government records. Manhattan city commissioners on Tuesday will consider a request to issue $52 million in industrial revenue bonds to Meadowlark Hills to build 43 new independent living units, an underground parking deck and a fitness and classroom space. Industrial revenue bonds are a tax-exempt financing mechanism local government entities issue with no fiscal impact to themselves because companies repay them. The bonds allow companies to benefit from property tax exemptions and sales tax breaks while funding a project. Kansas Public Radio LAWRENCE — A nonprofit that supports Haskell Indian Nations University is seeking donations after President Donald Trump’s administration terminated 35 employees at the small college for American Indians and Alaska Natives. In a post on its website, the Haskell Foundation said 100% of proceeds will go to its emergency fund, which would be used in part to temporarily fill vacant positions. K-State and Manhattan city officials on Thursday announced a partnership with Veo, a provider of transportation shared among users, to bring 400 Astro electric scooters to town this weekend. It’s not the first time the town will have electric scooters on its streets and sidewalks. Manhattan previously offered shared-use electric scooters between August 2020 and December 2023, but the partner company, LINK, recalled the scooters after ending operations. Authorities are investigating a reported theft at Dillons after an unknown suspect scammed the business out of more than $16,000. According to the RCPD, officers responded to the 100 block of Sarber Lane on Feb. 26 at approximately 8:16 a.m. Dillons was listed as the victim after reporting a fraudulent cash transaction resulting in a total loss of $16,348.58.
