Riley County Commissioners met Monday to discuss a variety of different items on their agenda. One of the biggest being the closing of the Riley County Treasurers office in order for the state wide Motor Vehicle and Drivers Licence system conversion. The office will be closed from May 1st through the 7th and could potentially cause issues for people trying to renew their April tags at the last minute. Bruce Weber’s basketball team just got a little bit stronger already, but it’s not via transfer just yet. The Manhattan Mercury is reporting that Angel Rodriguez has decided to stay at K-State. This according to Rodriguez’s former AAU coach Art Alvarez, who says Rodriguez wasn’t sure about whether to return to K-State as recently as Friday.  He reportedly made his decision over the weekend.  Rodriguez says he’s remaining a Wildcat because he loves his teammates and the university, but also because of Weber’s ability to tutor point guards like Deron Williams and Dee Brown. (AP)   Justin Verlander beat Kansas City once again, surviving a shaky ninth inning Monday night to deliver the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 victory over the Royals.  Austin Jackson hit a leadoff homer and Brandon Inge added a two-run shot in the fifth for the Tigers, giving their reigning AL Cy Young winner enough support when things got tight.  Verlander (1-1) allowed an RBI single by Humberto Quintero with two outs in the ninth, and then loaded the bases when he walked Mitch Maier and plunked Alcides Escobar on the elbow.  Verlander came back to strike out…

(AP)   After a season of turmoil, one marred by injuries to some of their best players and the firing of the head coach, the Kansas City Chiefs are ready for a reset.  The Chiefs began their offseason program Monday, and next week’s draft gives general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel another opportunity to fill holes that have developed since last season’s 7-9 campaign.  Pioli has already been busy this offseason, bolstering the offense by signing tackle Eric Winston, running back Peyton Hillis and tight end Kevin Boss.  Kansas City will also get a bunch…

It was a day of recognitions, including one good-bye, at Monday’s Rilley County law board meeting. Outgoing Manhattan Mayor Jim Sherow had kind words for his law board colleagues and in particular, the Riley county police department. RCPD Director Brad Schoen remembered working with Mayor Sherow, and even on a lighter note playing basketball, with Sherow many years ago. Sherow had been serving as Law Board vice-chair, and incoming Manhattan Mayor Loren Pepperd will take over that position. WESTMORELAND, Kan. – The Pottawatomie County Commission voted unanimously during its Monday meeting to extend its current contract with ATA Bus through the end of the 2012 calendar year “We’re pretty excited to expand those services to St. George and continue that service,” Dustin Trego, management assistant of operations at Pottawatomie County, said. ATA Bus Director Anne Smith was also present at the meeting. She said the fares for the new commutes to St. George have not yet been determined. Flint Hills Christian school has a new science building. A grand opening was held Monday morning for the new facility. Deanna Likes is the marketing/fundraising coordinator at Flint Hills Christian school, located at 3905 Green Valley Road.  She says it’s been a collaborative  effort between the Administration and a lot of parents. Administrator Frank Leone tells KMAN traditional lab counters are just part of the new facility. The school has been working on the building for two years.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Gov. Sam Brownback has vetoed a bill strengthening the Kansas bank commissioner’s regulatory authority because it also would shift power over hiring and salaries away from the governor’s office. It’s the second time this month the Republican governor vetoed an obscure bill approved by the GOP-controlled Legislature with bipartisan support. The first bill dealt with barbering regulations. Brownback rejected the banking bill last week. His office didn’t announce the action, but The Associated Press obtained a copy of his veto message Monday.
