It’s a full agenda for the Manhattan City Commission for tomorrow’s work session. First up on the docket is Kansas State University president Kirk Schulz, who will be updating the commission on activities occurring at K-State while also highlighting university initiatives and how they relate to the community. The second item concerns the Bethel AME and Pilgrim Baptist Churches. The commission will be taking the next step in the process of adding those two churches to the National Register of Historic Places. An altercation over the weekend led to the arrest of a Manhattan man. Riley County police arrested 22-year old Craig DeCormier II Saturday evening. DeCormier, of the 700 block of Pebblebrook Circle, is expected to face felony charges of aggravated battery and aggravated assault as well as misdemeanor theft. RCPD released DeCormier’s on an $11,000 bond.
A fire destroyed the unfinished Strasser Village apartment complex early Sunday morning. The Manhattan Fire Department responded to the call at 4th and Leavenworth shortly after 2:30 a.m. and would spend the next seven hours dousing the fire. By the time the blazes were under control, the fire had consumed the entire northeastern portion of the building. Battalion chief Jim Blanck does not believe foul play was involved but at this point the cause of the fire remains undetermined. No injuries have been reported in connection with the fire. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The head of the Topeka branch of the NAACP said Thursday that a foundation dedicated to telling the story of the Brown v. Board of Education school desegregation case shouldn’t be booted from a National Park site. Last month, the National Park Service announced the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research had until Dec. 1 to move out of the Brown v. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A federal magistrate judge is limiting the public disclosure of some information in a lawsuit challenging a new Kansas law restricting insurance coverage for abortions. U.S. Magistrate Judge Kenneth Gale issued a protective order Thursday in the lawsuit filed against the state by the American Civil Liberties Union. He says the parties agreed that since the case relates to the controversial issue of abortion, the release of certain information should be limited to the parties, their attorneys and the court. DERBY, Kan. (AP) Police in a Wichita suburb are looking for a man driving a gray Ford Crown Victoria that resembles a patrol car and using flashing lights in the grill to stop other vehicles. Derby police tell KWCH-TV the man wears a silver badge and a name tag and has been impersonating an officer. A Derby resident says the man pulled him over Wednesday, but left in a hurry after being asked for his badge number.
