Much of the Manhattan City Commission will be in Washington DC for the next three days attending the Association of the United States Army annual meeting and exposition. City manager Ron Fehr indicates the commission will also be meeting with the congressional delegation to discuss issues affecting the Manhattan area such as transportation and affordable housing. Riley County commissioners discussed leasing proposals for a total of 32 acres at 1435 Collins Lane during their meeting on Thursday. The land is currently home to the UFM community gardens program, but is owned by the county. Dennis Peterson, a member of the county property management committee, says there has been talk about an extension at the location. “The request is for ten acres for now and designates the west part,” Peterson says. “We would rather see the use of the northeast quadrant, saving some of that going west.” The county commission voted to allow UFM to expand its…
A centuries old tradition was observed in Manhattan today (Friday) with a cornerstone dedication ceremony of the Flint HIlls Discovery Center by the Masons of Kansas. Also present for the ceremony was Kansas Secretary of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Robin Jennison, who talked about trying to promote the treasure of the tall grass prairies, and the importance of what is on the cornerstone of the Flint HIlls Discovery Center to “inspire, interpret, explore, ” but the most importantly to “preserve. ” Manhattan Mayor Jim Sherow commented on the appropriateness of the windy day, saying our community has been on a long…
Earlier this morning, shortly after midnight, Deputies of the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s officer were pursuing a blue Kenworth semi truck North on K-99. The truck then entered Pottawatomie County at Wamego. The truck allegedly rammed and chased a pickup while in Shawnee County, rammed a car that had pulled off the road and then chased the car into a private residence’s yard. The truck finally became stuck and was stopped while being pursued by Deputies from Wabaunsee County, Pottawatomie County and the Wamego Police Department. The 55-year-old driver, Robert Smith of Salina, Kansas, was arrested at the scene and taken to the Pottawatomie…
A chase involving an 18 wheeler impacted a three county area early this morning. The semi reportedly was driving erratically, first reported west of Topeka on I-70, running other vehicles off the road. Attempts to stop the semi failed, with the chase continuing through Wabaunsee County, then north of 99 and through Wamego. Reports indicate the chase finally came to a stop four miles north of Wamego in a field behind a house. Injuries may have been involved. Leaders of the Big 12 Conference cleared the way Thursday to add TCU, a move that would bring in a rising program and potentially shore up a league that seemed ready to fall apart just a few weeks ago. The Big 12’s presidents and chancellors voted unanimously to authorize negotiations with the Horned Frogs, who play in Fort Worth, Texas, and boast the defending Rose Bowl champion. CANTON, Kan. (AP) The Maxwell Wildlife Refuge in central Kansas will be the site of a three-day re-enactment of life in the state during the early 1800s. The annual mountain man rendezvous takes place Friday through Sunday at the refuge, located six miles north of Canton in McPherson County. The living history event is open to the public and features primitive trapper camps, teepees, Indian folklore, flint knapping and other attractions. Primitive camping is available at no cost at the adjacent McPherson State Fishing Lake. Prairie tours of the refuge will be conducted every hour.
