A suicidal man who forced the closing of Interstate 70 near Manhattan after releasing dangerous chemicals in his car has died. The man has been identified as a 20-year-old resident of Lawrence. The man died Tuesday at a hospital in Wichita, where he was flown after being decontaminated. Northeast Kansas law enforcement closed a stretch of I-70 late Monday night into early Tuesday morning after an as-yet-unidentified male phone Riley County Dispatch expressing the need for the phone number to a suicide hotline. Interstate 70 has reopened to westbound traffic but remained closed to eastbound vehicles near downtown Topeka, nearly 12 hours after the fatal, pre-dawn of a tractor-trailer. The crash happened just before 5 a.m. Tuesday, spilling hot asphalt oil from the rig’s tanker and pulling down an overhead sign. Flu season is here, and Riley County has had it’s first official case of flu reported for this year’s flu season. That’s according to Riley County/Manhattan Health Department Administrator Chuck Murphy who told county commissioners a young Manhattan child tested positive for influenza type “A.” As of Monday, 13 type “A” H-3 viruses have been cirulating the country, with only three of the H1n1, which caused so many problems a couple of years ago. Family and friends welcomed home more than 200 Soldiers of the 1st Infantry Division’s 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team Sunday evening during a redeployment ceremony on Custer Hill. This was the third main group of “Dagger” Brigade Soldiers to return from Iraq after a one year deployment to Baghdad, where they served in an advise and assist capacity as part of Operation New Dawn. Approximately 800 2nd Brigade Soldiers have now returned to Fort Riley, with several more flights scheduled over the next few weeks. Fire destroyed a cabin-type structure in Riley County this past weekend. Riley County Fire Chief Pat Collins indicates the fire at 20187 Vilander Road was reported at about 10:30 Saturday night. Riley County Fire chief Pat collins tells KMAN the fire was in the northern part of the county near the Marshall county line. By the time firefighters arrived the structure had already collapsed into the basement, so they mainly were fighting a grass fire. Collins indicates 35 firefighters responded. The Manhattan City Commission will gather Tuesday to examine budget projections for the next three years, which also includes reviewing money given to outside agencies. Funding for one entity in particular may be in jeopardy, according to Mayor Jim Sherow. The Social Services Advisory Board may be in question going forward. The group received $417,200 in 2011 . Mill levy rates, interest rates, along with utility rates are all expected to receive attention at the meeting.
