TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach’s campaign treasurer faces a potential $5,000 fine from the state ethics commission over mistakes in finance reports from last year’s campaign. Kobach said Thursday that his campaign treasurer, state Rep. Tom Arpke of Salina, is not responsible for the mistakes and actually helped find them. Arpke did not immediately return a telephone message seeking comment. The ethics commission has set an Oct. 26 hearing on whether Arpke should be fined. Missouri is the latest Big 12 school in the spotlight, considering whether to stay in the conference or move to another league. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A nationwide enforcement operation targeting criminal immigrants has rounded up eight people in Kansas and more than 2,900 convicted illegal immigrants across the country, including arrests in KMAN’s listening area. Arrests were made in Manhattan, Junction City, Kansas City, Lenexa, Overland Park, and Topeka. Two arrests were made in Manhattan and one in Junction city. All three were Mexican males. A Manhattan man was arrested after Riley County police received a report of a dispute early Wednesday morning. 30-year old Felix Deaquino of 500 Laramie was arrested after striking roommate, 26-year old Raphael Honoriega, with a glass beer bottle. Honoriega endured a severe laceration on the top of his head and is undergoing treatment. Deaquino is expected to face one count of felony aggravated battery. RCPD has set Deaquino’s bond at $5,000
Riley County’s Primary Care Clinic will soon be accepting medicaid patients on a trial basis. The Manhattan-Riley County health board passed the motion during Wednesday’s meeting. Health board president Brady Burton says the plan will become effective at the beginning of the 2012 calendar year. “I think it’s going to be phased in,” Burton said. “I’m not sure on the number yet, but there will be ‘x’ amount of new patients taken in to start with.” The preliminary estimate for the number of medicaid patients that would be taken was 500. The pool of candidates for the health administrator position has been reduced to two. Riley County-Manhattan Health board president Brady Burton informed KMAN that the third candidate, Larry Franken, has withdrawn his name from the race. The board voted to expedite the decision-making process during their Wednesday meeting. “We are planning to have a special meeting on October 3 to discuss the position,” Burton said. “We could possibly make a motion and vote on the new administrator.” The final candidate, and current assistant Health Administrator, Suzanne Kufahl (Koo-fall), will start the interview process later this morning.
The Manhattan Christian College men’s soccer team secured a 3-1-road victory over Southwestern College (NAIA) Tuesday night. After a 0-0 first half, MCC junior forward Zack Watkins open the game’s scoring in the 51st minute scoring from 20 yards out. Southwestern leveled the score in the 76th minute from a deflected shot, which sailed over sophomore goalkeeper Ricky Wiseman. Manhattan tied Washburn Rural with a team score of 345, but Washburn’s 5th score was lower than Manhattan’s 5th score, giving Washburn Rural trophy.
