HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) A new survey shows many school districts are offsetting state cuts by slashing jobs and increasing taxes. The Hutchinson News surveyed a quarter of the state’s 286 school superintendents. The paper reported that many superintendents felt the cuts in state aid shifted a greater share of the cost of schools from the state to local property taxes. House Speaker Mike O’Neal, R-Hutchinson, criticized schools for not spending down their reserve funds further as this year’s legislation allowed. NEWTON, Kan. (AP) Authorities have again delayed the first-degree murder trial of a Kansas man accused of killing a 19-month-old boy. Twenty-seven-year-old Chad Carr, of North Newton, had been scheduled to go on trial Monday in Harvey County in the March 2010 death of Vincent Hill, his girlfriend’s son. The Harvey County Attorney’s Office gave no reason for the delay and said a new trial date hasn’t been set. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The mother of a baby who went missing from her Kansas City home two weeks ago says she was drunk when the girl disappeared. Deborah Bradley told NBC’s “Today” show Monday that the night her baby, Lisa Irwin, disappeared she had bought wine and consumed “enough to be drunk.” Bradley says police asked her if she killed Lisa, who was 10 months old when she disappeared Oct. 4. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A former slave who later became the first black graduate of Southwestern College in Winfield no longer lies anonymously at a Wichita cemetery. The Rev. Elijah Pilgrim Geiger now has a tombstone at Maple Grove Cemetery recognizing his achievements as a minister and a scholar. Geiger lived from 1864 to 1943 and had been buried in an unmarked grave. The Wichita Eagle reports Geiger graduated from Southwestern in 1899 and went on to become a Wichita minister. OLATHE, Kan. (AP) A body found Saturday in a wooded area in Miami County has been identified as 20-year-old Olathe resident Samuel J. Hargrove. Hargrove was reported missing Thursday after last being seen in a green Buick LaSabre, and his body was found about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say there were no signs of criminal activity. They had issued an alert for him early Saturday after concerns were raised about his well-being. Investigators from the Olathe Police Department and Miami County Sheriff’s Office were involved in the discovery of Hargrove’s body.

Riley County Police Captain Kurt Moldrup tells KMAN Trever Olson, 19, suffered a gunshot wound to his upper right arm while playing Russian Roulette with friends around 11:30 Saturday night. The incident occurred in the 700 block of Dondee Drive. Moldrup says charges of aggravated battery are being considered due to the reckless manner in which the group was using a firearm, though none had been filed as of Monday morning.
