The student-created Fake Patty’s Day holiday has become a fixture in Manhattan over the past couple of years; however, the event has created it’s fair share of problems extending well beyond Sunday hangovers Manhattan city manager Ron Fehr tells KMAN finding ways to regulate Fake Patty’s will be the focus of tomorrow’s Manhattan City Commission work session. The “celebration” has caused multiple legal problems. RCPD received nearly 800 calls during last year’s holiday. An inflatable device with what was described as a “threatening message” was located and deflated without apparent incident early Sunday morning in Wamego. According to updates from the Wamego Police Department, a concerned citizen called in the device, located in the area of Valley and Balderson on the east side of Wamego. The police and fire departments responded, setting up a perimeter to cordon off the area before outside agencies could respond. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) A former Kansas State University English professor is challenging the legality of his prison sentence for a first-degree murder conviction in the death of his ex-wife. Thomas E. Murray is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years for the stabbing death of Carmin Ross, whose body was found in November 2003 in her home north of Lawrence. Murray filed a lawsuit in Douglas County District Court claiming there were problems with the state’s DNA evidence at his trial. SEATTLE (AP) Ichiro Suzuki had four hits, including a homer, to help the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 7-3 on Friday night. Miguel Olivo and Justin Smoak each added three hits for the Mariners. Olivo fell a single short of the cycle. Blake Beaven (4-5) gave up three runs in 6 1-3 innings, retiring 13 straight batters during one stretch. Jeff Francis (5-16) allowed five runs in 3 1-3 innings. Luis Aguirre’s defense attorney’s attempted unsuccessfully to remove the death penalty option from the table in the case. Aguirre is accused of killing his 18 -year-old girlfriend Tanya Maldanado, and her 15-month-old son Juan Maldanado in 2009. Judge Meryl Wilson ruled that the case met all of the requirements to allow prosecutors to pursue the death penalty. The Next motions hearing will be held on October 19th.
