(AP) The Kansas City Chiefs have placed offensive tackle Ryan O’Callaghan on injured reserve and released backup kicker Todd Carter to reach the 80-player roster limit before Tuesday’s deadline. O’Callaghan had missed nearly all of training camp with an undisclosed injury. He was picked up off waivers before the 2009 season and started 12 games that year, but he was injured in training camp last season and Barry Richardson took over the starting job. Concerns and questions filled the auditorium at the Manhattan Public Library Tuesday evening when a community health care forum was presented by the Manhattan Alliance for Peace and Justice. People of many different age groups and backgrounds, as well as many involved in the healthcare field were in attendance to ask questions of the three panelists. The panelists represented Pawnee Mental Health, Mercy Regional Health Center, and Konza Prairie Community Health and Dental Center. Questions ranged from insurance issues, to low income health care, and all the way to Medicare and Medicaid.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP)   Texas A&M says it has not sent a letter of withdrawal to the Big 12 Conference.  The brief statement by school spokesman Jason Cook comes a day after The New York Times said in a story posted on its Web site Monday night that university President R. Bowen Loftin sent a letter to Missouri Chancellor and Big 12 board chairman Brady Deaton to inform the league it was leaving.  The report cited two unidentified college officials with direct knowledge of the decision.  The university said Monday it had received a letter from Big 12 Commissioner…

The first of 13 home matches at Ahearn Fieldhouse this season will be Tuesday night as K-State volleyball hosts Creighton.  The Cats are coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Georgia Tech tournament, with tight losses to the Yellow Jackets and Louisville, along with a win over Tennessee Tech.  K-State will get a stern test from the Bluejays, who are coming off a 20-win season in which they upset Iowa State in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.  Creighton is 1-2 this season with a pair of losses to Texas A&M, and win over UTSA. DETROIT (AP)   Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar hit back-to-back homers and the Kansas City Royals beat the first-place Detroit Tigers 9-5 Monday night.  Alex Gordon also homered and Johnny Giavotella added a bases-loaded double for the Royals, who came in 18.5 games behind Central Division leaders.  Luke Hochevar (9-10) ended a four-start winless streak.  He gave up five runs on eight hits in seven innings.  Max Scherzer (13-8) allowed seven runs on 10 hits and a walk in three-plus innings to drop to 2-2 in August.  Both losses were to the Royals.

J. E. Dunn will be handling the construction of Pottawatomie County’s new jail/courthouse. The commission revealed it’s decision during Monday’s meeting in Westmoreland. Commissioner Stan Hartwich says the commission interviewed a total of four companies: Coonrod and Associates, KBS Construction, Universal Construction and J.E. Dunn Construction. The numbers proposed by J.E. Dunn came at the lowest cost to the county. The new jail/courthouse is estimated to be a $14.1 million project. After reports of toxic blue green algae at Milford Lake in Clay, Geary and Dickinson Counties, The Army Corps of Engineers closed the Fort Riley Marina until further notice. Earlier it was reported that three dogs died due to exposure to blue green algae at Milford Lake.  Along with these reports, there have also been cases of human illness within the last few weeks. A Fort Riley woman has pleaded guilty to assisting in the desertion of her husband from the Army while authorities were investigating the death of her eight-week-old son according to U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom on Monday. 22-year-old Erika Suzanne Pierret Frey of Fort Riley pleaded guilty to one count of enticing desertion and harboring a deserter.  In her plea she admitted that she and her husband, Private Austin A.J. Frey, fled from Fort Riley during an investigation following the death of her infant son. Fort Riley Police were called to the Frey Household on April 25, 2011, where they found…
