Summer is officially over for students in USD 383, as classes started back up today (Wednesday) in Manhattan and Ogden. District Communications Coordinator Michelle Jones tells KMAN students attending Manhattan High’s West Campus will notice some changes. Jones says the renovation makes the school feel more open. A guided tour is planned for September 25th at the high school to allow parents and community members to view the newly renovated campus. A Manhattan woman has entered a plea and been found guilty in connection with a February child abuse case. 21-year-old Megan Pretty, formerly of of 730 Allen Road, Lot 144, entered the plea involving a three-year-old victim. Sentencing has been set for October third.
Exciting news has come out of Wamego, which houses a Caterpillar production facility. The Wamego Caterpillar facility has been chosen by the company to go to “Enhanced Production”. Director of the Pottawatomie County Economic Development Corporation Bob Cole said on Tuesday’s “In Focus” that the upgrade will create 120 jobs for the area. Cole also explained the regional impact that Caterpillar has, stating that many employees live all around the area in communities such as Alma, Eskridge, Manhattan, and even Frankfort and Seneca. K-State already knew it’s spot in five star 2012 basketball prospect Perry Ellis’s final four, but now the Cats know they’re getting an in home visit as well, according to the Wichita Eagle. Ellis announced today that he has set 3 of his 4 in home visits and they are all in the state of Kansas. The K-State coaches will be in the Wichita Heights senior’s home on September 12th, KU on September 9th, and Wichita State on September 13th. Former K-State running back and kick returner William Powell is getting another shot in the NFL. Powell was re-signed on Monday by the Arizona Cardinals. Powell, an undrafted rookie, was released by the team Aug. 2 but returns to give the team a fourth running back after the Cardinals lost rookie Ryan Williams to a torn patella tendon in his right knee. Williams, another rookie from Virginia Tech, is out for the season, and Arizona will be looking to pick up another running back as teams make roster cuts.
Three former K-State men’s golfers impressed this weekend at the Nationwide Tour’s Midwest Classic this weekend in Overland Park. Aaron Watkins, Robert Streb and Joe Ida all made the cut and shot under par through four rounds. Watkins and Streb both tied for 46th place at 11-under par, while Ida finished tied for 72nd at six-under par. Watkins is now 38th on the Nationwide Tour money list.
US Postal Service District Manager Rick Pivovar was at the Manhattan Fire Department on 2000 Denison to try to put out some fires of his own. Pivovar laid out the current financial troubles of the US Postal service, and said that if things don’t change then the US Postal service will be insolvent by next month. Pivovar said that a number things have contributed to the problem. Heavy reduction in volume from first class mail, and overpayment into retiree health costs to name a few.
