Riley County Police Patrol Division Captain Tim Hegarty says crime has gone down compared to what it was at this time last year. Hegarty expects first half of the statistics to be released within the next few weeks, but at this point can conclude that crime is down. As of today, Riley County has decrease in crime by about 3.1%, meanwhile Manhattan has decreased by 5.1%. Stay tuned to KMAN over the next few weeks as the final statistics are announced.

Riley County spending impacts approximately 70 thousand people each year. This makes the county budget a very important for Commissioners to determine. County Budget and Finance Officer Johnette Shepek says that nearly 90% of the current budget goes to personnel. The other funds are provided to the Riley County Police department and the County building. Shepek reports that the RCPD uses the funding to cover inmate medical costs as well as the facilities costs at the Law Enforcement Center. Commissioners hope to have the final budget approved by July 14th.
Kansas Highway Patrol arrested a Manhattan resident on Sunday evening after he led KHP on a high speed motorcycle chase. KHP reports that 24-year-old Da Hua was arrested for reckless driving, attempted to elude police, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, riding a motorcycle without a motorcycle endorsement on his license, and a having an illegal muffler. KHP reports that one of their officers had pulled over Hua on a routine traffic stop. When the officer went to run his license Da Hua attempted to flee North on Highway 24. Firework sales will begin Friday, July 1st at 12:00 p.m. and continue until July 4th at midnight. Manhattan Fire Marshall, Ryan Almes says that fireworks cannot be discharged on city streets and throwing fireworks at people or vehicles is prohibited. Almes also reminded us that bottle rockets are illegal in Kansas. The City of Manhattan will be hosting a public fireworks display at Cico Park on July Fourth. Admission is free.
Riley County Police reports that a Manhattan man has reported a job-site burglary. Jorge Vargas reported to RCPD that sometime between midnight of the 21st of June, and 06:30 pm on the 24th, an unknown suspect broke into his workshop and stole over 42-hundred dollars worth of tools. RCPD reports that they have no suspects at this time.
