A Manhattan man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after police said he violated the state’s offender registration act. Riley County Police arrested 34-year-old John Deem around 3:13 p.m. Sept. 3 in the 1000 block of Seth Child Road. The arrest stems from a report filed in August. Deem was booked into the Riley County Jail on a $15,000 bond, where he remains confined at the time of this report.

Officers responded to an unattended death in 3700 block of Pillsbury Drive in Manhattan on September 4, 2025, at approximately 9:41 a.m. A 23-year-old man was found with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. At this time, there is no reason to believe there was any other party involved in the man’s death. Kansas State edge rusher Jayshawn Ross was arrested early Wednesday morning in Crawford County and charged with distributing marijuana. K-State confirmed to The Mercury that Ross is no longer with the team. Ross was arrested by the Arma Police Department. His bond was set for $15,000. A former four-star and native of Kansas City, Missouri, Ross signed with Alabama as a linebacker in 2023 before transferring to K-State. By Emma Laura USD 383 officials on Wednesday adopted the budget for fiscal year 2026, which will raise property taxes by 5%. The board also voted to exceed the revenue-neutral rate, which is the mill levy rate that would generate the same amount of tax dollars as the previous year.
