The new era of the ten-team Big 12 will begin with a preseason #1 ranked team as Oklahoma sits atop the USA Today coaches’ poll, released on Thursday.  The Sooners received 42 of 59 first place votes, with #2 Alabama receiving 13 of the remaining nods.  #3 Oregon and #4 LSU split the other four first place votes, and Florida State rounds out the top five.  The Big 12 has four other ranked teams, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M are #8 and #9, Missouri is pegged at #21, and Texas is #24 despite a 5-7 season a year ago.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Cowboys cornerback and former K-State star Terence Newman likely will miss the entire preseason for the second time in four seasons because of a groin injury.  Newman got hurt in practice Wednesday when he got tangled with a receiver during pass coverage drills. He later posted on his Twitter account, “A little groin pull and be back for the Jets!”  The Cowboys’ season opener is Sept. 11 at New York.  Newman, going into his ninth NFL season, missed all four preseason games in 2008 because of a groin injury.  He returned for the season opener, but later…

An Army lieutenant with the Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, finished near the top of his class in this year’s All-Army Combatives Tournament at Fort Hood, Texas. The tournament was hosted at Fort Hood from July 20 to July 23 to challenge competitors from around the Army in the Modern Army Combatives Program. Second Lt. Matt Valnoski, a Soldier with the brigade’s 601st Aviation Support Battalion, fought his way to the third place match for the 155 lb. welter weight category. FORT RILEY, Kan. – A Fort Riley Soldier received a certificate of appreciation from Junction City Mayor Pat Landers this week for his help in apprehending a suspect fleeing local police in June. Sgt. Steven Zimmerman was on his way home from Wal-Mart June 26, when he saw the suspect running away from the Geary County Sheriff’s office. Zimmerman, who was closer to the suspect than the pursuing deputies, stopped his vehicle and took up the chase. (AP)   Luke Hochevar pitched neatly into the eighth inning, Billy Butler homered and drove in four runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Orioles 6-2 Wednesday night.  Hochevar (8-8), the first player picked in the 2006 draft, is 4-0 in his past seven starts and has matched the longest winning streak of his career.  He also set a personal high for wins in a season, having gone 7-13 in 2009.   Hochever allowed one earned run and four hits in 7 1-3 innings. ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP)   Top pass rusher Tamba Hali and the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to terms on a five-year deal worth $60 million.  $35 million of the contract is guaranteed.  Hali will be at training camp Thursday afternoon on the campus of Missouri Western State University. Hali had been designated as the Chiefs’ franchise player after a breakthrough season in which he led the AFC with 14.5 sacks.  His new contract places him in the same echelon as Cowboys pass rusher DeMarcus Ware, who has a six-year, $78 million deal.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP)   Former All-Pro fullback Le’Ron McClain has agreed to a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.   McClain is expected to provide a short-yardage and blocking option to go with a group of speedy running backs that includes Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles.   McClain is a former fourth-round draft pick who spent four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.  The two-time Pro Bowl selection was voted first-team All-Pro after running for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2008.  The 260-pound fullback’s work load had dwindled the past two years during the tenure of Coach John Harbaugh.  He…

USD 383 school board member Wednesday night voted to approve the publication of option three for the 2011-2012 budget.  This option was one of four that was presented to the school board.  While the majority of the board members agreed on option three, Walt Pesarisi  had concerns. Option three would increase personal property tax by $78 and commercial business property tax by $293.  Although this option will be published, board members will still have the abilty to lower this amount if they find they are able to.  President Doug Messer says he will continue to review the options. K-State finally knows it’s first opponent at the Diamond Head classic in Hawaii. The Cats will get the Southern Illinois Salukis on December 22nd for a 4:30 pm tip off on ESPNU.  SIU has long been a Missouri Valley Conference power, going to the Sweet 16 in 2007, but slipped to just 13-19 last season.  K-State is 6-0 all-time against the Salukis, winning the last meeting in 1983 at Ahearn Fieldhouse.
