The water line break reported Tuesday morning at Bluemont Elementary School in Manhattan was related to construction. It was a valve issue on one of the water lines in the school. According to USD 383 Communications coordinator Michele Jones,there isn’t water in all of the classrooms – some classrooms are damp while others are dry. Riley County Commissioner Karen McCulloh, who just finished her term as Chair, announced Tuesday morning she will not be seeking re-election next year. McCulloh said she has enjoyed her time as chair and that the staff has been great to work with. Her only problem with the position is the time commitment is very demanding. She explained her mother is 94 and she wants to spend more time with her. With her mother not wanting to leave her home in Ottawa, McCulloh feels that she needs to visit her at least once a week. A couple of young Wildcats were recognized for their accomplishments on the gridiron this past fall. The Football Writers Association of America named K-State kick returner Tyler Lockett and offensive lineman B.J. Finney freshman all-americans. K-State is one of two schools to place two freshman on the all-american rosters. USC is the other. Lockett averaged a nation leading 35.2 yards per return with two touchdowns this season. Finney anchored an offensive line that produced one of the best rushing teams in the Big 12 (190 ypg).
There was a change in agenda for the Manhattan Airport Advisory Board. Instead of an update concerning the consultant selection, Manhattan Regional Airport Director Peter Van Kuren says he asked for a vote for a recommendation to the city commission instead , pointing out the firm’s experience and involvement with the city of Manhattan previously. The consultant team that was selected was Mead and Hunt Incorporated, with a five year contract involved. The agreement is for architectural and engineering services for that time period.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) The Kansas City Chiefs have hired Romeo Crennel as their new head coach. The team announced the decision Monday. Crennel joined the Chiefs as the defensive coordinator in 2010 after four years as the head coach in Cleveland. He also served as head coach for the Chiefs the final three games of this season after Todd Haley was fired.
Brittany Chambers scored 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds as the K-State women won at Kansas 63-57 on Saturday night. Jalana Childs scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half, and Branshea Brown added 12 points. WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A trial has been postponed until next month for a Wichita man accused of driving under the influence and speeding before a head-on crash that killed a college student. Thirty-seven-year-old Tommie Lee Cameron had been scheduled to go on trial this week in Sedgwick County District Court, but KAKE-TV reports the proceeding was continued until Feb. 27. Prosecutors say Cameron had a crack pipe in his possession on July 25, 2010, when his car plowed into a vehicle stopped at a Wichita intersection. DIGHTON, Kan. (AP) The fatal shootings of two brothers in a western Kansas home are being investigated as a homicide-suicide. Lane County Sheriff Robert Williams says officers went to the Dighton home Friday afternoon on a report of a possible shooting. Officers found the bodies of 44-year-old Raymond Sanchez Jr. and 37-year-old Ricky Sanchez inside. The Hutchinson News reports the sheriff’s department believes no one else was involved but is continuing to investigate. KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) State regulators will meet later this week at Kansas Speedway to review the operations of a state-owned casino set to open there next month. Hollywood Casino overlooks a turn of the NASCAR track in Kansas City, Kan. Its grand opening is scheduled for Feb. 3. On Friday, members of the state Racing and Gaming Commission will review the casino’s plans for security, surveillance and financial and audit controls. HERINGTON, Kan. (AP) State health officials are warning central Kansas residents to avoid a creek near Herington following a sulfuric acid spill. The Department of Health and Environment issued the warning for 5 miles of Lime Creek north of U.S. 56. The acid leaked Sunday from a ruptured tank on a Union Pacific rail car at a rail yard, sending 11,000 gallons of the pollutant into the water. The health department says people, pets and livestock should avoid drinking from the creek or using it for recreation. KDHE will continue testing the water to determine when it is safe again.
