Once again Manhattan has impressive unemployment numbers compared to other metropolitan areas in the state. The Manhattan metro area shows 4.9 percent, the lowest for metro areas. The Manhattan M-S-A includes Riley, Pottawatomie, and Geary counties. The 4.9 percent October figure is lower than September 5.4 number and lower than last year’s 5.2 percent. Meanwhile, the city of Manhattan had a 3.9 percent unemployment rate, also the lowest in the state for cities. FOXBORO, Mass. (AP)   Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes to Rob Gronkowski and the New England Patriots shook off a sluggish start to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 34-3 on Monday night.  Julian Edelman returned a punt 72 yards for a touchdown and Kyle Arrington had two interceptions, helping the Patriots (7-3) increased their AFC East lead to two games. Two area legends will be enshrined in the Kansas High School Activities Association Hall of Fame in the class of 2012. Manhattan High graduate Amy Oberhelman won 10 state championships and was named all-American 13 times during her career as a swimmer from 1990 until 1994.  Oberhelman set six state records including the 200 freestyle, which still stands today.  She attended Stanford University where she helped lead the Cardinal to three NCAA championships, and was named an all-American eight times. 12 team state titles and 71 individual state champions in cross country and track, that’s the tally in 33 years…

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP)   Suspended Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel says he “failed miserably” as a role model after his recent drunken-driving arrest and guilty plea.  Pinkel publicly discussed his Nov. 16 arrest and subsequent conviction for the first time Monday, meeting with reporters at his attorney’s office. Pinkel did not coach during Missouri’s win over Texas Tech on Saturday as part of a one-week unpaid suspension. Kansas State elevated the talent of its front court during the early signing as head coach Frank Martin announced the additions of high school standouts Robert Upshaw and Laimonas Chatkevicius for the class of 2012. The 7 foot 275 pound center Upshaw is a four star prospect according to Rivals and the # 43 prospect overall.  The Fresno, CA native is the #8 center in his class and chose K-State over offers from Georgetown, Louisville and Fresno State.  Upshaw was rated among the top 50 players in the nation by ESPN, CBS Sports.com, and MaxPreps, and was pegged as the…

It’s been a tough year for Ole Miss at 2-9, and Saturday night was no different as the Rebels were taking a 52-3 drubbing at the hands of #1 LSU.  Ole Miss doesn’t lack size as they have the biggest player in the country, 6′ 10″ 377 pound defensive tackle Terrell Brown.  Brown has lost 33 pounds since arriving on the Oxford campus, but was no match for a folding chair on the Rebel bench.

Once again Fake Patty’s day found itself before Riley County Law Board members for discussion Monday, at the request of one of the board members. There’s been some discussion of a special permit being sought, involving consumption of alcohol outside. There’s also been talk of a possible beer garden and armbands. Riley County Police Director Brad Schoen stressed he has concerns. Manhattan’s Assistant City Manager Lauren Palmer and Board Member Jim Sherow also expressed some skepticism. Riley County will receive two grants from the Kansas Department of Transportation to help with road and bridge improvements over the next few years. The first  grant will be dedicated to replacing a bridge located at 40th Avenue, which runs over McDowell Creek. Assistant county engineer Gary Rosewicz said that he expects the project to go to bid in 2013. The value of the first grant is $480,000, with the county putting up the remaining $160,000 to completely fund the project. The second grant will be used to replace guardrails on N. Otter Creek Road. After a stellar senior season, Manhattan High’s Deante Burton has verbally committed to continue his football career at K-State.  The 6′-2″  200 pound Burton played both wide receiver and cornerback for the Indians, who finished 10-1 for a third straight season, including a trip to the 6A state playoffs.  He was a two-year starter and had 20 receptions this season for 327 yards and five touchdowns.  Burton also picked off a pair of passes anchoring the Indians’ secondary.  He also had 244 yards receiving in 2010 with three TD’s.  Burton chose K-State over interest from Oklahoma State.  He’ll likely receive…
