FORT RILEY, Kan. (AP) The 1st Infantry Division’s headquarters is getting ready to leave Fort Riley and Kansas for a year in Afghanistan. The deployment marks the second overseas duty for the headquarters unit since the division’s flag returned to Fort Riley from Germany in 2006. The division staff spent a year in Iraq in 2010. A ceremony is scheduled for March 7 at Fort Riley for a formal casing of the division’s flag, signifying that it is deploying to combat. The sales tax receipts from the end of the holiday season are in and counted. Manhattan Finance Director Bernie Hayen, announced the end of last week that “nearly all major retailer, auto dealers, and Manhattan Mall stores remained up compared to the same February period a year ago.” Also, because of these strong retail sales, Hayen continued by stating that the budget is $250,000 ahead of the budget projections. Nearly $924,000 was collected for the February reporting period, with an adjusted rate of nearly $846,000. WICHITA, Kan. – Manhattan High School took top honors at the Class 6A State Wrestling Tournament by capturing the school’s third state title at Hartman Arena on Saturday night. After holding a 36-point lead heading into day two, the Tribe held off a furious charge by Wichita Heights as Manhattan edged out the second place finishers by 13 points.  Manhattan’s score was 165.5, Wichita Heights registered a score of 152.5, while Lawrence was a distant third at 118.5. SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Kansas State spotted No. 19 Oregon State a 6-0 lead after three innings before battling back to get to within two runs, but the Beavers scored six unearned runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 13-5 win Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. COLUMBIA, Mo. – Kansas State led by seven points with less than four minutes in regulation, but a late Missouri surge sent the game into overtime where the Tigers prevailed, 61-56, Saturday afternoon at Mizzou Sports Arena. MANHATTAN, Kan. – A career game from Jordan Henriquez was not enough for Kansas State, as the Wildcats dropped a close game to Iowa State, 65-61. Henriquez finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks. Those high marks helped create the first double- double of his career. Both teams struggled in the opening moments of the game, scoring a combined eight points in the first five minutes of the half. After cruising to a 7-2 win on Thursday night over San Diego State in their first game of the weekend at Tony Gwynn Stadium things turned out much differently for the Kansas State Baseball team on Friday at the University of San Diego’s Cunningham Stadium. Trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Friday’s opponent the Toreros  erputed for 12 runs against the K-State bullpen on their way to a 15-1 victory. At least one area wrestler will be in the ring on Saturday hoping to become a State Champion.  Kyle Wilson of Wamego advanced to the State finals after defeating Michael Tubbs of Colby in Friday’s semifinals at the Bicentennial Center in Salina.   Wilson will wrestle for the title against Andrew Morgan of Baldwin High School in the 132 lb. weight class in Class 4A. Meanwhile, the Class 3-2-1A Tourney wrapped up in Hays with Rock Creek finishing 15th with 40.5 points and Riley County finishing 51st with two points.  The area’s best team showing came from Rossville which was 10th. …
