She committed to K-State when she was only 15 years, and Thursday was finally signing day for Riley County senior Kelly Thomson.  The point guard inked with Coach Patterson’s Wildcat program after leading the Falcons to the state tournament the past three seasons.  Thomson playing at K-State will be a dream come true, as she remembers attending her first K-State games in the era of players like Kendra Wecker, Megan Mahoney and Laurie Koehn. Thomson averaged 14.5 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists points per game in Riley County’s 20-win season a year ago.  Practice starts Monday for the Falcons.

A lot of talented players have come thru the Manhattan High baseball team and gone on to star at the next level.  Indian senior shortstop Derek Francis has a chance to add himself to that list as he recently to play at Iowa Western Community College.  The Reivers won the national championship in 2010 and played in the NJCAA World Series four straight years from 2007 to 2010.  Francis will be among the top shortstops in Kansas this season, as he hit .468 last season with a home run and 32 RBI’s for MHS.  He had 36 hits, eight doubles,…

Several thefts are being investigated by the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s office. An ATV with an estimated value of $2,500 was taken from rural Wamego between October 29th and November fourth. The 2011 ATV is described as a 2009 American Sportworks Talon, red in color with black fenders accents. It was taken from the 14,000 block of Becker Road. And taken between November second and fifth were several items from a rural Blaine residence on Reves Road. A fatal car accident that reportedly happened more than two weeks ago in Geary county has just been discovered and reported by the Kansas Highway Patrol. James Brown, 67,  of Memphis, Tennessee died in the one vehicle accident. According to the KHP, Brown was driving a ’94 Ford Ranger on I-70 at westbound milepost 309, about eight miles east of Junction City on October 25th. The vehicle left the roadway for an unknown reason and came to rest  in the East ditch. Again, KHP indicates they just discovered the vehicle Thursday afternoon

The Riley County commission addressed issues regarding the construction of Westar Energy’s new substation on Thursday. “The issue is that it (substation) is being built and the county was never asked for a zoning permit,” commission chair Karen McCulloh said. “It’s before the planning board right now, which is where it should have been several months ago.” McCulloh clarified that the all parties responsible are now making a concerted effort to clear up all of the issues. “Monty Wedel (Riley County’s planning and special projects director) is now involved,” McCulloh said. “K-State is being very positive in working with us,…

A group calling itself  “Save our Social Services” or “SOS” has started collecting signatures on a petition to force action on an ordinance designed to protect social services funding. The proposed ordinance would require the city to spend two percent of the general fund budget for social services each year as it has in the past. In addition, allocation for social service agencies would be determined through the longstanding Social Services Advisory Board. SOS needs signatures from 1,494 registered Manhattan voters to force action on the ordinance. Once signatures are validated, the city commission would have 20 days to either…
